It was a lovely Sunday. I drove to a local supermarket. In my pocket, my shopping list was so long and wallet was light. Still, I need to get a weeks worth of groceries for my family. I packed my car, looked down at my list, and hoped I could afford it all.

As I came near to the door, I saw an old man with kind eyes and a gentle smile. He said he was collecting for a local food bank. He handed me a second shopping list and asked if I could help them. I smiled back, took the list and walked into the store. I really wanted to help but wasnt sure whether I could this time.

I walked through the store getting what I needed, when I looked down at my full cart, I wondered again if I even had enough to pay for it all. Then as I put my own list back into my pocket, I remembered the food bank list under it. I smiled. I went over and picked up two of the biggest boxes of rice for the food bank. It took another six dollars out of my wallet, but my heart felt six times larger when I did. And when everything was totaled, I had just enough to pay.

It takes so little to make our world a better place. A few dollars can help to fill a childs hungry belly. A smile and hug can help to heal a hurting heart. An encouraging word can inspire someone else to live and to love. An accidental act of kindness can change anothers day and life. It is up to you, though. You can think only of yourself and those close to you while saving a few dollars on rice.

Once upon a time, there was a wise man living alone. Many people came to his house for good advice. So he enjoyed a great reputation around the country.

A young man, who felt unlucky and disappointed about his life, decided to visit the wise man. When he arrived there, he found the wise man was reading in the cottage by the river. With a smile, the wise man heard the young mans words, and said to him, “Come to help me boil a kettle (壶;罐) of water first!”

The young man saw a big pitcher (大水罐) standing in the corner, next to a small fire stove, but he found no firewood, so he went out for it.

Five minutes later, he came back with some dead wood. And then he filled up the kettle with water and put it on the stove. He put firewood in the stove and burned it up, but because the kettle was too large, when the faggot (柴把, 束薪) burned out, the water didnt boil. Then he ran off to get more firewood. When he went back, the water had turned cold. This time he became smart, so he was not eager to light the fire, but went out to look for more firewood again. Because the wood was well prepared, the water boiled pretty soon.

The wise man suddenly asked him, “If there is not enough firewood, how should you boil the water?”

The young man thought for a moment and shook his head.

The wise man said, “If so, pour out some water of the kettle.”

The young man nodded thoughtfully.

The wise man continued, “You had so many wishes at first and set too many goals, just as the large kettle was filled with too much water but you didnt have enough firewood, so you couldnt boil the water.
