Text 1

W: I like English at school. What subject do you like, Simon?

M: I prefer maths to English.

Text 2

M: Excuse me, could you tell me when the next train to Beijing will leave?

W: Sure. Well, it’s three o’clock now. The next train to Beijing will leave in ten minutes.

Text 3

W: Daniel, what is your house made of? Metal or wood?

M: Neither. It’s made of stones.

Text 4

W: Shall we go to the park tomorrow?

M: Good idea! But I can’t go there early.

W: Don’t worry! I’ll wait for you.

Text 5

W: How beautiful! I’d like to be here for two weeks.

M: Really? Wonderful!

Text 6

M: Do you know where we are going for our school trip?

W: Don’t you know, Mike? We are going to the beach.

M: Sounds exciting. How are we going there then?

W: It’s not far from here. All of us like to ride bikes.

M: OK! But my bike was broken yesterday. I’m going to ask my uncle to fix it up. I think it will be OK by then. When and where are we going to meet?

W: At 8:30 tomorrow morning at the school gate.

M: OK. I’ll be there on time. Oh, can Mary go with us, too?

W: I am afraid not. She has to take a piano lesson. But her sister Alice is going with us. I’m sure we can have a good time.

Text 7

M: Hi, Li Ling. If you are ready to go shopping, don’t forget to take your own bag.

W: I know. To save the environment, the supermarkets won’t offer us free plastic bags.

M: I think it’s right to do that.

W: I think we can do something else, too. For example, ride a bike to work, and don’t take a bus or drive a car if we don’t have to.

M: I agree. And we should turn off the lights and computers when we go out.

W: And we should save water and recycle water.

M: Right. Water is becoming less and less now.

Text 8

W: David, I want to talk to you. You didn’t go to school yesterday. Could you tell me why?

M: Well, I just didn’t want to have classes.

W: Hmm, that’s strange. You know, David, every teacher says you’re a very good student. But you suddenly stayed away from classes for a whole day. Is there anything wrong?

M: Well, my parents have been quarrelling with each other all week long. I can’t focus on my study and I’m always thinking about their shouting.

W: I see. So where did you go yesterday?

M: I went to an Internet bar to chat with a friend of mine. He is the only person that understands me.

W: OK, I don’t blame you, David. But next time you have a problem like this, come to me first. It doesn’t help not to go to classes. I think I’ll have a talk with your parents tomorrow.

Text 9

W: Morning! So, what seems to be the trouble?

M: Well, I hardly know where to begin. I feel unhappy most of the day.

W: OK, do you have trouble sleeping?

M: No. I am always sleeping and often feel too tired to do even simple things.

W: Do you get worried a lot?

M: All the time. I worry about my exams. I worry about my homework. I worry about being late for school ...

W: Mmm.

M: I’m quite worried about everything in the school.

W: And how long has this been going on?

M: Well, about two years.

W: That’s a long time. Have you spoken to anyone about this before?

M: No, I thought it would just go away and it does get a lot better in the spring and summer.

W: Aaah, so you feel worse in the winter.

M: Yes. I’m feeling much better now. The sun seems to burn away my worries.

W: Do you find you have more coughs and colds between September and April?

M: Yes, more than usual, I’d say. Doctor, do I need to take some medicine?

W: No, you needn’t. There is nothing seriously wrong with you. But you must do more exercises. Play football or basketball for at least half an hour every day. You’ll soon feel well again.

M: Thanks, doctor.

Text 10

In order to learn what the students’ life was like at night, I made a survey about it. I asked twenty students in our class what they were doing last night. Here are some of the results.

Jim said he was doing his homework between seven and nine. Then he watched TV for an hour. Mike was doing the same thing from seven to nine. Then he went to bed. Jane spent one hour on her homework. Between eight and nine thirty she was practicing playing the piano. It only took Bill about half an hour to finish his homework from seven. Then he played computer games for nearly three hours. He didn’t go to bed until eleven.

According to the results, most students have to spend one to two hours on their homework. That’s to say, their main activity is doing homework.
