Text 1
W: Excuse me, when is the next bus coming?
M: At a quarter to eleven. It’s twenty past ten now. You’ll have to wait for some time.
Text 2
M: You are playing basketball, Tina! You used to be quiet.
W: And I used to be in the classroom. So I was weak. Doctors say I need to get more exercise.
Text 3
W: I did some washing last weekend. It’s tiring and boring. I prefer doing my homework.
M: But I think teenagers should help parents with some housework. I helped my mother clean the garden last weekend.
Text 4
M: What a nice camera you’ve got! Did you buy it in a shop or in a supermarket?
W: Neither. I bought it on line.
Text 5
M: What kind of music do you like?
W: I like pop music and rock music. But rock music is my favorite.
Text 6
W: Excuse me, sir. Could you show me the way to the Holiday Hotel? I think I am lost.
M: Sure. I’m on my way there, too. Just follow me.
W: Thank you so much.
M: You are welcome. Where are you from?
W: I am from Canada.
M: Is it the first time you have been in China?
W: Yes. China is a very beautiful country. I love Chinese food so much.
M: I hope you can have a great time here. Here we are. You can see the Holiday Hotel right across the street.
W: Thank you so much.
M: You are welcome. Enjoy your trip in China.
Text 7
M: Amy, tomorrow is your mom’s fiftieth birthday. Do you know?
W: Of course I do. What should we do for her?
M: What about buying her a beautiful skirt?
W: That’s a good idea. It would make her look younger. And then we need a birthday cake with fifty candles.
M: That’s right. Maybe we could have a special dinner.
W: Fine. But where should we have it?
M: We can have it at home. I’ve learned to cook a few dishes from a friend.
W: All right. Are you going shopping with me this afternoon, Dad?
M: OK. Let’s go.
Text 8
M: Good afternoon! Can I help you?
W: I’m looking for a Father’s Day gift.
M: OK. How about a new wallet?
W: How much is that wallet?
M: Which one?
W: The black one.
M: It’s fifty dollars.
W: That’s too expensive for me. Do you have a cheaper one?
M: What about this brown one? It’s thirty-five dollars.
W: I think my father will like the design. But I don’t have so much money.
M: How about this red tie? It’s only eleven dollars.
W: Oh, it looks nice. I’ll take it. Here is the money.
M: Thank you.
Text 9
W: Tom, I rang you yesterday, but you were out.
M: I’m sorry, Mary. I came home quite late yesterday. Jim and Betty invited me to go for a picnic.
W: Oh, where did you go for the picnic?
M: National Park.
W: Oh, it’s lovely in National Park at this time of the year.
M: Yes, and the sun shone all day.
W: There’s a river in National Park. Did you have your lunch near the river?
M: Yes. Then, after lunch, we went for a walk along the river. Then we climbed up to the top of a hill, and looked at the beautiful view.
W: What did you do then, Tom?
M: Well, we went back to the car, and we drove to another part of National Park, and we had afternoon tea there. Then we started to drive home.
W: Oh, you left early?
M: Yes, Mary. But it took a long time to reach home because there was a lot of traffic on the road.
W: Well, that was a lovely day’s outing.
M: Yes, I had a very good time.
Text 10
Dear sister,
I hope you can help me solve a problem. I was very happy at school in the past. I did very well in sports and all my lessons. In fact, I was very popular. Everyone wanted to be my friend.
Then a new student called Fred came to our school. First he got a higher score than me in a test. Then he joined the school football team and scored two goals. The other students started to think he was better than me.
Some of my best friends became his friends. It is getting worse and worse. Yesterday, I gave the wrong answer to a question in class, but Fred gave the correct one. Now everyone thinks that Fred knows more than I do.
What can I do to get my friends back?
Yours,
Mark
