M: Yes. Why didn’t you show up for the first class this morning?

W: I don’t even want to talk about it. My car broke down.

M: What happened?

W: There seems to be something wrong with the engine. It’s driving me crazy!

M: Wow! Have you thought about getting a new car?

W: Yeah, I’ve thought about it, but I can’t afford a new car. I have no time to do part-time jobs.

M: Or you can take the bus. It’s convenient.

W: Really?

M: Yes. There is a bus stop near your home. It is about 30 minutes from your home to school.

W: That’s a good idea. I’ll consider it.

Text 13

Different countries have different birthday traditions. In China, on a child’s first birthday, he is brought in front of a large gathering of friends and family members. The child’s future is predicted by the things he picks up. Egyptian birthday parties are filled with dancing and singing when a child turns one year old. Flowers and fruit are used to decorate the party. Danish people fly their national flag outside their home to show that someone in the family is having a birthday. And while the child is asleep, gifts are put around the bed. In the United States, a girl’s sixteenth birthday is very important. They often have big parties which they call Sweet Sixteen parties. In South Africa, some parents give their children a key on their twenty-first birthday. Sometimes instead of getting a real key, people get cakes shaped as keys.
