Text 1
W: Tom, may I borrow your book please?
M: Of course, Kate. Here you are.
Text 2
W: It seems there is much rain this year in Sichuan.
M: That’s true. The radio says it’s going to rain tomorrow.
Text 3
W: Hi, Jack. Where’s your mother?
M: She is there. Look! She is cleaning the window!
Text 4
W: What does Peter’s uncle do?
M: He is a cook.
Text 5
W: It was your fifteenth birthday yesterday. Am I right?
M: That’s right. I received a lot of birthday gifts. My parents sent me a computer, my uncle gave me a camera and my aunt sent me a bike.
Text 6
W: Did you have a school trip last weekend?
M: No, I didn’t. I cleaned up my house.
Text 7
W: Oh, that’s too bad. It doesn’t work again!
M: Sorry, madam, but you have to walk up the stairs today.
Text 8
W: Do you miss your mother, Jerry?
M: Of course. I send her e-mails once a week. I ring her up once a month.
Text 9
W: When did the film begin?
M: At a quarter to six in the afternoon. But when I got to the cinema, it had already been on for ten minutes.
Text 10
W: Do you like playing golf or tennis, David?
M: Neither. I’d prefer to spend time listening to songs.
W: What kinds of songs do you like best?
M: All of them. I really don’t have a favorite.
Text 11
W: Excuse me, sir. May I ask you a few questions?
M: Yes. Go ahead.
W: How often do you go on holiday?
M: Twice a year.
W: And what do you prefer to do when you are on holiday?
M: Well, I do like to visit art shows with my wife. I often learn a lot from her.
W: Have you ever traveled abroad?
M: No, never. It’s too expensive for me. If there isn’t an art show on, we usually travel to somewhere near the sea. In the morning, I prefer to sit under a tree, reading a book, while my wife usually draws pictures. In the afternoon, I prefer to go swimming in the sea, while my wife usually just lies on the beach and enjoys the sun.
W: I wonder if you stay at home when you are on holiday.
M: No, we don’t like staying at home, although my parents do.
W: OK. Thank you very much.
Text 12
W: Hey, Bill, you look tired. Are you OK?
M: Hey, Lucy. I feel very bad. I didn’t sleep well last night.
W: Why? Did you go to bed late?
M: No, I went to bed early. But I couldn’t sleep at all. My next door neighbor had a big birthday party together and they made so much noise!
W: Oh, that’s terrible!
M: Yeah, I just read for a while. Then, about 4:00, they finally left.
W: 4:00 am?
M: Yeah, I slept for about one hour—maybe. Then I got up and had some coffee.
W: What about your roommate Paul?
M: He got up around 6:00. In fact, we had breakfast together. Then he had to go to work. When he left, I went to bed again and slept for about two hours.
W: I’m really sorry. Maybe you can get some more sleep this afternoon.
M: Yeah. Maybe.
Text 13
Life is like the four seasons.
When I was young it was the spring of my life. I was born. I played a lot, and then started school. I learned many new things. Like a flower, I grew bigger every day. There were always happy days.
At the age of twenty-seven, I had a good job. I was strong and happy. One year later, I married a man and had a child. I did not have time to think. Every day I was busy. The summer of my life passed quickly.
Then the days got shorter. My child was a university student, and then a reporter. My home was much quieter. I started walking more slowly. One day I stopped working. I had more time. I understood this was my autumn.
But days get shorter and colder. Winter comes. I am older and weaker. I know I do not have many days left, but I will enjoy them to the end.
