Sports architecture is a static image of what Olympic spirit represents.
This year, the Olympic stadiums in Brazil amazed the world, not only with their look. The venues, despite the controversies during the construction process, were able to pull off a supreme experience in the last minute.
Urban Forest
Built predominantly of concrete, the Estadio Nacional fully inherits the architectural tradition of Brasilia by adopting a minimalist design. The simplicity of the design is further enhanced by near-circular components such as the circular concrete pillars around the stadium that support the whole structure.
A circular promenade surrounds the main structure and is connected to it by dozens of entrances/exits ramps. The suspended roof of the stadium is a double-shell, movable structure comprised of metal cables with an outer concrete compression ring. Various transparent coatings cover the upper side of the roof as opposed to the lower side which is covered by re flective membranes with a backlit film design.
The stadium also has a number of sustainable features such as the integrated solar photovoltaic (PV) modules on the roof and a rainwater harvest and reuse system. Proudly overlooking the verdant Brasilia National Park, the stadium was built in support of Brazil's commitment to hosting the world's firs“t sustainable FIFA World Cup”.

Treasures of the Rainforest
The stadium was the world's first sports building cert ified to U.S. Green Building Council's LEED standards. Refurbished from the stadium Estadio Vivaldao, Arena Amazonia is enclosed by a metal structure designed to resemble a straw basket.
Taking full advantage of the geographic features of the area, the stadium is built on an elevated ground. The roof wraps downward to connect with the façade and forms a continuous ring of shelter for seating and circulation spaces. The structure is composed of mutually supporting cantilevers, constructed with steel hollow-core girders, which also function as drains for water from plentiful tropical rains. Semi-translucent fiberglass fabrics in fill the diagonal skeleton, and allows for natural ventilation.
Moving Sand Dunes
Inspired by the coastal city of Natal's famous sand dune landscape, Estadio das Dunas's undulating façade is a simulation of the moving sand dunes in the region. Its streamlined exterior blends seamlessly with its 20 petal-shaped modules and is a tribute paid to the harmonious relationship between man and nature.

World Record
Having a capacity to pack crowds in of up to 200,000 people, Estadio do Maracana is the largest and most well-known stadium in Brazil. It will host Rio 2016's opening and closing ceremonies as well as football matches. Footprints of famed Brazilian footballers can be found at the entrances. Unlike other stadiums in the world, its stands are even lower than the pits around the pitch.
