After years of development， China’s hi-tech innovation capacity has been greatly strengthened and is “going global” more actively. Compared with most of the ASEAN countries， China is relatively advantageous in science and technology. Since most of the ASEAN countries have comparatively huge demand in agricultural， biological and energy technologies， which are the strong points of China， it is a good timing for China and ASEAN to carry out cooperation in the field of science and technology.

On this basis， the CAEXPO’s Advanced Technology Exhibition is more like a catalyst for China-ASEAN cooperation in science and technology， which speeds up the “reaction” for more remarkable results. After 11 years’ development，a longer-term cooperation mechanism has been established for China-ASEAN science and technology cooperation. Under this mechanism， more effective commercialization of research findings and technology transfer have been realized， and more cooperation projects have been concluded， making science and technology cooperation a prominent part of the CAEXPO and China-ASEAN relations.

In cooperation mechanism， China and ASEAN reaped fruitful results in 2012 Year of China-ASEAN Science and Technology Cooperation. Especially in the 9th CAEXPO， the first China-ASEAN science and technology ministerial meeting was held in Nanning， Guangxi，during which the “China-ASEAN Science and Technology Partnership Program” was launched and the China-ASEAN Technology Transfer Center was established. Besides， an integrated collaborative network covering the China-ASEAN region has been built by the two sides for technology transfer. And the Forum on China-ASEAN Technology Transfer and Collaborative Innovation provides a new cooperation platform for China and ASEAN to conduct technology transfer， promote technology innovation， and upgrade the level of science and technology cooperation.

Apart from the constantly improved cooperation mechanism， the CAEXPO’s Advanced Technology Exhibition has helped more scientific and technological achievements transfer into productivity， benefiting both China and the ASEAN countries. Modern agriculture， new energy and renewable energy， biological medicine， electronic information， energy conservation and environmental protection have always been the emphasis of the Advanced Technology Exhibition. Among them，modern agriculture， which is closely related to national economy， has become the priority area for the ASEAN countries. At present， China andASEAN have carried out cooperation in biogas techniques， silkworm breeding techniques， no-tillage and cast transplanting of paddy rice， as well as planting techniques of new varieties of vegetables and fruits， bringing tangible benefits for agricultural production.

With the continuous economic development of China and ASEAN， as well as the growth in people’s living standard， the number of science and technology cooperation projects between China and ASEAN is on the rise while the content is upgraded to advanced technology. During the 11th CAEXPO， 16 key science and technology cooperation projects between China and ASEAN were contracted， including co-building the China-Thailand Technology Transfer Center， China-Laos Technology Transfer Center， Fast Channel for Mobile Payment in Southeast Asia，Beidou and Geospace Industrial Demonstration Base， Satellite Navigation Cooperation Base， China-Thailand Science Popularization Base， and the Scientific Research Cooperation Base for Agricultural Products. The extensive use of the above-mentioned advanced technologies has benefited the ordinary people of China and ASEAN.

It has become the common consensus for all countries in the world to“prosper with the ocean”， and maritime cooperation has thus become the priorities of China-ASEAN cooperation.

CAEXPO: Show Time for Ocean Technology

“Science and technology play a pivot role in maritime cooperation， which provides a guarantee for deep-sea fishing， ocean technology， maritime search and rescue，marine survey， navigation positioning，and disaster prevention and mitigation etc.，” said Cao Jianlin， China’s Deputy Minister of Science and Technology. So，the strengthened cooperation between China and ASEAN in marine science and technology would help extend and deepen the bilateral cooperation and faciliate China-ASEAN maritime cooperation.

The CAEXPO has always been an important platform for China-ASEAN science and technology cooperation. As Mr. Cao Jianlin claim， via this platform，various cooperation mechanisms have safeguarded China-ASEAN science and technology cooperation. On the forthcoming 12th CAEXPO， the Advanced Technology Exhibition will focus on ocean technology for a greater show.

According to the officials of China-ASEAN Expo Secretariat， the 12th CAEXPO’s Advanced Technology Exhibition will give prominence to ocean technology to promote China-ASEAN maritime science and technology cooperation. First， apart from modern agriculture， energy conservation，environmental protection， new energy and renewable resources， electronic information， and biological medicine，ocean technology would be included. Second， it will focus on “Year of China-ASEAN Maritime Cooperation” and set up the exhibition area for China-ASEAN maritime science and technology innovation.

In addition， the 3rd Forum on China-ASEAN Technology Transfer and Collaborative Innovation will be held concurrently with the 12th CAEXPO. At the China-ASEAN Technology Matching Conference to be held during the forum，“ocean technology” would be included apart from modern agriculture， biological medicine， electronic information， new energy， energy conservation and environmental protection， providing oneto-one opportunities for well-known enterprises， industry associations，chambers of commerce， and scientific research institutions of China and ASEAN to discuss maritime science and technology cooperation.

Most of the ASEAN countries are

coastal countries which need to develop their marine economy and have interest in China’s offshore fishery and tsunami warning technologies. This has created a promising prospect for China-ASEAN cooperation on maritime technology.

According to Chen Lianzeng， Deputy Director General of China’s State Oceanic Administration， China has carried out cooperation with Indonesia， Thailand，Malaysia and Vietnam in monsoon observation， air-sea interaction， marine ecological protection， and marine biotechnology etc. Their cooperation also extends to marine environment forecasting and disaster warning，marine endangered animals and marine ecosystem protection， as well as marine science and technology capacity building.

Via the CAEXPO’s Advanced Technology Exhibition and other related conferences and forums， China-ASEAN marine science and technology cooperation will continue to extend to other fields，with project negotiations being carried out more effectively. It is expected that marine science and technology cooperation would become a “new star”in China-ASEAN science and technology cooperation.
