Plot:

It portrays the hero, Andy Dufresne, who spent 19 years digging his way out of the Shawshank prison with a small rock hammer and once again regain1 freedom. It contains such views as hope, friendship and persistence2. Years have passed, but The Shawshank Redemption successfully stood the test of time and became one of the most classic movies.

In 1947, the promising banker Andy Dufresne was convicted of3 murdering his wife and her lover. He was actually innocent4 but he had to spend the rest of his life in the Shawshank prison.

During his stay in Shawshank, Andy made friends with Red who had wide contacts outside and can help others get such things as chess, cigarette, alcohol and so on. Andy asked Red to get him two things—a tiny rock hammer and a post of the then famous actress Rita Hayworth.

Once, Andy and several other inmates got a chance to work outside when he overheard5 captain Hadleys (the most cold-hearted guard) complaining about the tax on the inheritance. Andy took a risk and gave Hadley some professional suggestions on how to minimize the tax legally.

Soon, he is asked to help the guards in Shawshank and nearby prisons deal with their financial matters. The warden Norton took advantage of Andys expertise6 in accountancy to launder7 money for him with a fake identity. In return, he was given an chance to work in the library where he started teaching the rest of inmates to read and write and encourage them to have faith in life again.

The appearance of Tommy changed the situation dramatically8 because Tommy could testify Andys innocence. Andy went to meet Norton in excitement, hoping to gain a retrial9 and win his freedom back. However, In order to keep Andy in prison to help him launder money, Norton refused the request, and even murdered Tommy.

Tommys death hastened10 Andys pace of regaining freedom. He pretended to give in to Norton but secretly planned his escape and collected the evidence for Nortons and Hadleys crime.

One morning, Andy was absent for the roll call. He escaped from the tunnel covered by Rita Hayworth. While Norton and other guards were wondering how he could secretly digged such a big hole, Andy withdrew all the money in Nortons bank by using the fake identity he created. At last Norton committed suicide and Hadley was arrested because Andy revealed11 their crime to the local newspaper. In the end, Andy settled down in a seaside village of Mexico where he got his final freedom together with his old friend Red.

View:

There are always moments in our life when we feel both hopeless and helpless. We feel that the whole world has abandoned12 us and that so many difficulties stand in our way to success. Life is full of ups and downs, then what should we do? Simply give up? Absolutely not.

Life is like a box of chocolate, you never know what you will get. The key to getting through difficulties is to keep hopeful for life because hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things.

Classic lines:

1. Fear can hold you prisoner; hope can set you free. It takes a strong man to save himself, a great man to save another.

2. Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

3. Some birds arent meant to be caged, thats all. Their feathers are just too bright.

4. I guess it comes down to a simple choice: get busy living or get busy dying.
