Are you a media addict (上瘾者) who would go mad after two hours without TV, friend requests, exciting online games and your mobile—or would you easily survive?

Recently, university students around the world were asked to volunteer in a global experiment called Unplugged. It was designed to see how young people would react if they were asked to observe a total media ban (禁令) by unplugging all forms of media devices for 24 hours.

Unplugged is being run by Dr Roman Gerodimos, a lecturer in Communication and Journalism at Bournemouth University. Dr Gerodimos said there were already signs of how much the exercise affected volunteers. “Theyre reporting withdrawal symptoms (脱瘾症状), overeating, feeling nervous, lonely and disconnected.”

During the 24-hour experiment, three of the experiments guinea pigs had to bear one intrusion (侵扰) from the media: a BBC reporter and cameraman who followed them around for the day. They were asked to write down 100 lines about their day offline, but of course, they all waited until the next day when they had access to their laptops.

Elliot Day wrote: “Today, my whole morning routine (常规) was thrown up into the air. Despite being aware of the social importance of the media, I was surprised by how empty my life felt without the radio or newspapers.”

And Charlotte Gay wrote: “I have to say the most difficult item for me to be without has been my mobile; not only is it a social tool, its my main access point of communication.”

Earlier in the year, a UK government study found that in the UK we spend about half our waking hours using the media, often plugged into several things at once.

A difficult problem that is facing society is the legalization (合法化) of euthanasia, another word for mercy killing. Euthanasia is a method of causing death painlessly to end suffering. People who are suffering from accidents and incurable diseases are being kept alive by artificial (人工) means. They do not have a chance to recover, but American laws do not allow doctors to end their lives. However, in my opinion, euthanasia should be legalized for several reasons.

The first and most important reason to support euthanasia is that these patients have no chance of recovery. They can never lead normal lives and must be kept alive by life-support machines. They are clearly more dead than alive and will never be able to live a normal life.

Another reason to support mercy killing is that medical costs are very high. Today the cost of a hospital room can be as much as $ 1,450 per day for basic care, which does not include the cost of specialized care or the use of special equipment. The high cost of medical care can cause financial problems for the family.

The final reason to support the legalization of euthanasia is that the family suffers. The nurses and other medical workers can give the terminally ill patient only the smallest amount of care. Thus, the family must spend time to care for the special needs of their loved ones.

In conclusion, terminally ill patients should be allowed to die with dignity (尊严) because they have no chance to recover and live normal lives. Therefore, the family should have the right to ask doctors to turn off the life-support machines or to stop further medical treatment. To lengthen life artificially when there is no hope for the future is a disaster both for the patients and for their loved ones.

The United States economy has dipped into economic recession (经济衰退). This caused discomfort and hardship in every level of society; but for many of the nations poor, discomfort and hardship turned into misery (苦难).

An increase in homelessness is probably the worst result of a nations financial disaster. About 3 million Americans were homeless because of a lack of affordable housing. Experts suggest that a family should spend no more than 30 percent of its income on housing. In fact, in some families housing costs make up 50 percent or more. An unexpected event, such as losing work or illness, can quickly push a family into homelessness.

An article in Time magazine tells a story of one such family. A young couple and their three children rented a

two-bedroom apartment for about $350 a month. They could hardly go on with the husbands $920-a-month take-home pay; so when their rent was raised to $500 a month, they could no longer make ends meet.

Another woman was found dead on a street in Washington D.C., the capital, and she died at a bus-stop across the street from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

People become homeless for different reasons. Some may not be able to pay for housing, because they have lost their job and cannot find another place they can afford. Others have mental diseases, or are addicted to drugs or alcohol, many of whom do not live with their family. And whats more, there are not enough centers for shelter as the government doesnt pay enough attention to this social problem.

People are making efforts to solve the problem. However, it will not be easy, because it is a personal and economical problem as well as a social problem.
