In the old time, there was an old man who lived on making and selling charcoal. He had two sons. The older was named Qingshan while the younger was called Hongshan. Before the old man passed away, he left the eastern hill to Qingsahan and the western hill to Hongshan.

The western hill was covered with dense trees, which supplied a huge source for the charcoals. Hongshan was very diligent and spent days and nights burning the charcoal. Thus he became quite rich and lived comfortably. However, the trees were run out, and Hongshan planted crops in the hill. But the crops were flushed away by a rainstorm. Having nothing to eat, Hongshan had to come to the eastern hill to ask his brother for help.

The trees on the eastern hill were scarce, but Qingshan was good at planning. He cut down the trees that did not grow well and burned them into charcoal. Then he planted saplings where the old trees were cut. He also opened up the wasteland at the foot of the hill to plant crops, raise cows and horses. In the first few years, he lived very poorly. But three or five years later, the samplings grew into big tress; the crops were closely grouped and the cows and horses agglomerated into a big herd. The rainstorm that destroyed Hongshans crops did nothing to Qingshans farmland because the crops were protected by the trees.

Hongshan saw the green trees and lively farmland of his brother. He felt very strange about this prosperity and asked his brother for the reason. Qingshan told him heartily: “You only demand things from the hill without supplementing its inventory. You will eventually run out of the resources. You should keep the sustainable pattern to feed yourself with endless resources.”

Later, people said that “there will be enough firewood to burn as long as Qingshan is here”, to show that a root is needed to keep the supply stable.endprint
