Host A: Hey, do you have an idea for a new project, but you just dont have the money to get it started?
Host B: Well, for the past four years, the website Kickstarter has helped ordinary individuals get their ideas 1)off the ground through something called“crowd-funding.”
Host C: Since 2009, more than a 100,000 projects have launched with the backing of perfect strangers. They put up money and they do get a small reward, whether its a chance to play an extra or, perhaps, get an on-screen 2)credit.
In an industry where money reigns supreme, its hard for 3)budding young movie-makers to translate their vision into reality. But a popular online platform offers dreamers a chance to create.
Yancey Strickler (Co-founder of Kickstarter.com) : Kickstarters a funding platform for creative projects. Its a place where artists and musicians and filmmakers and game-designers and other creative people take their ideas to the public.
Man 1 (Voice from a Project Video) : So the idea is this…
Yancey: So you have an idea, you say what you wanna do and how much money you need to do it.
While originality is encouraged, there are
4)parameters.
Yancey: You have some simple guidelines to make sure everything is a creative project. We dont allow charity projects or “Fund-My-Life” or things like that. But otherwise…
Reporter: So no going to college on a…on a“kickstarter.”
Yancey: Yeah. Were reserved just for creativity.
Since the launch of the site, so-called “backers”have 5)kicked in over $700 million to fund all sorts of projects.
Yancey: That money has come largely in $25 increments.
And the creators are as diverse as the contributors. Yancey: Its really broad. I mean its everyone from a sixth-grader in Kentucky sending something into space to a 90-year-old woman in Florida putting out some design that she had.
