第三部分 阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)

A

We often think of future. We often wonder what the world will be like in a hundred years’ time.

In the future machines will do more work for man. Few people will have to work long hours. Man will have more free time. How will he use his free time in the world of tomorrow? Certainly he will still need holidays. Perhaps a permanent (永久的) station on the moon will be set up. Perhaps people will be able to visit the moon as tourists. Cheap rockets for space travel will be developed, permitting long journeys throughout the solar system. When that time comes, people will be taking holidays in space and visiting other planets.

Great progress will be made in medicine, too. Perhaps a cure will be discovered for the most terrible of all diseases—cancer. Pollution is a problem we must solve. In a hundred years’ time it will be controlled.

We will use up most of earth’s land to build our cities, so floating cities will be built. Japanese already have plans for cities of this kind. And there will be cities under the sea. The first of these will be completed.

In today’s world, children are taught for work. Most of the things they learn at school are used to help them in their future work. In the future, children will probably have to learn how to spend their free time. They may have to be taught for a life without much work.

56. In the future machines will help people ____ .

A. work hard B. enjoy themselvesC. study wellD. make things

57. What will we develop in a hundred years’ time for long journeys all over the solar system?

A. Spaceships.B. Planes.C. Rockets.D. Satellites.

58. Which of the following is TRUE?

A. There must be a permanent station on the moon in the future.B. There will be no pollution in the future.

C. Japanese have already built floating cities.D. We may find a treatment for cancer in the future.

59. What’s the best title for the passage?

A. How to teach children in the future.B. Future life.

C. Where to live in the future.D. Space travel.

60. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. The students don’t need to work in the future.B. The cancer can be cured in the future.

C. What the students learn at school is not useful in the future.D. People will have more time to have fun in the future.

B

In the future your automobile will run on water instead of gas! You will be able to buy a supercomputer that fits in your pocket! You might even drive a flying car!

Not all past predictions have been proven wrong. A few of them have been surprisingly accurate. Some great thinkers had predicted the arrival of the credit card, the fax machine and even the Internet—years before they were invented. But for each prediction that has come true, some others have missed by a mile. Many of these predictions didn’t consider how people would want to use the technology, or whether people really needed it in their lives or not. Let’s look at some predictions from the not-too-distant past.

Robot Helpers

Where’s the robot in my kitchen? Nowhere, of course. And he’s probably not coming any time soon. Robots do exist today, but mostly in factories and other working environments.

Back in the 1950s, however, people said that by now personal robots would be in most people’s homes.

So why hasn’t that happened? Maybe because robots are still too expensive and clumsy (笨拙的). And probably the idea of robots cooking our dinners and washing our clothes is just too strange. At home we seem to be doing fine without them.

Telephones of Tomorrow

In 1964 an American company introduced the video telephone. They said by the year 2000 most people would have a video phone in their homes. But of course the idea hasn’t caught on yet.

Why? The technology worked fine, but it overlooked something obvious: people long for privacy (隐私). Would you want to have a video phone conversation when someone after you just stepped out of the shower?

Probably not—it could be uncomfortable! Just because technology doesn’t always mean that people will want to use it.

Flying Car

And finally, how about that crazy prediction of the flying car? It’s not so crazy any more! But a flying car remains one of the most wonderful technology ideas to catch our imagination. Keep watching the news—or perhaps the sky outside your window—to see what the future will bring.

61. The passage is mainly about ____ .

A. predictions that can catch our imaginationB. predictions that haven’t come true

C. new technology that can change our lifestyleD. predictions that have come true

62. Why Robot Helpers haven’t been used in most people’s homes?

A. Because using this kind of robot at home is simply a waste of time and money.

B. Because this kind of robot hasn’t been developed yet.

C. Because people find it difficult to control this kind of robot.

D. Because this kind of robot won’t bring people practical use.

63. We can learn from Telephones of Tomorrow that ____ .

A. the technology of the video telephone doesn’t work wellB. the video telephone is on the way out

C. using the video telephone is uncomfortableD. people don’t want to let out their privacy

64. How does the writer find the flying car?

A. It is too difficult to imagine.B. It is too crazy an idea to realize.

C. It is likely to appear in the future.D. It has been the focus of the news.

65. In the second paragraph the underlined word “accurate” can be replaced by “____”.

A. trueB. 1C. wrongD. clear
