第三部分 阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)

A

Plants are chemical factories. Many of the chemicals that they produce are useful to humans. Besides food, plants provide material for paper, buildings, medicines and many others. Scientists study the chemicals to treat certain types of cancer.

On the other hand, the fast growth of the human population is changing the earth quickly. Only by understanding how human activities affect our environment can we predict global climate changes. Scientific studies of these changes and their effects on natural ecosystems and crop production are of great importance to the future of our society.

Other environmental problems, such as pollution, also interest scientists. Many plant species are especially sensitive to certain pollutants. Scientists study the effects of different types of pollution on plants. They use their results to advise lawmakers to make laws for environmental protection and to save priceless natural areas.

By using plant tissue culture (植物细胞培养), scientists can grow plants from single cell. This has exciting possibilities in biotechnology, forestry and so on. For example, the American chestnut was once a widespread tree in the Eastern forests. Today it has nearly disappeared because of a disease-producing fungus (真菌) that caused chestnut to die. The American chestnut recently has been grown in plant tissue culture.

The earth’s biological diversity (多样性) or the kinds of living things are decreasing. As humans change the environment for their own purposes, plants and animals living in these areas become increasingly endangered. Scientists work to identify (辨别) and understand new plant species, especially in such biologically rich areas as rainforests. Perhaps a plant undiscovered now will become an important food crop. There are probably many undiscovered plants that produce useful drugs to cure or treat human disease. Biological diversity also provides an important source of new genes to improve the plants we now use. As techniques of genetic engineering improve, so will our ability to improve our plants.

58. The importance of biological diversity lies in that ____ .

A. it can create as many plants as possible

C. we can have new species to replace the old ones

D. people may use it to cure or treat human disease

59. The best title for the passage might be ____ .

A. Plants and Humans

Joanne Kathleen Rowling’s life, like that of her own character Harry Potter, has the luster (光彩) of a fairy tale.

She remembers that she always wanted to write and that the first story she actually wrote down, when she was five or six, was a story about a rabbit. At Exeter University, she took her degree in French and spent one year studying in Paris. Then she moved to London to work for Amnesty International. During that period of time, on a very long train ride from Manchester to London, the idea came to her of a boy who is a wizard (巫师) in the summer of 1990. By the time the train drove into King’s Cross Station four hours later, many of the characters and the early stages of the story were fully formed in her head.

In 1992, J.K. Rowling moved to Portugal to teach ESL (English as a Second Language). She enjoyed teaching. She worked afternoons and evenings, leaving mornings free for writing. After her marriage to a Portuguese TV reporter ended in divorce (离婚), she returned to Britain with her baby daughter and a suitcase full of Harry Potter notes. Later, she lived in Edinburgh to be near her sister and decided to finish her book before looking for a teaching job. To escape her small and cold apartment, J.K. Rowling would go into coffee shops carrying her baby daughter and write when the baby fell asleep. In this way she finished the book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1996 and started sending it to publishers. However, it took her about one year to finally have it published. The book attracted readers of all ages, especially children. With the publication of the American edition, the book was renamed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 1998. Now J.K. Rowling is well-known almost all over the world.

第二节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)

If you come to London for the first time now, you’ll see a lot of buses and cars on the road, and you’ll also see a lot of bikes because nowadays more and more people travel by bike.

There are a lot of reasons for this. First, it’s very cheap to use a bike, and it’s quick, too. You often wait for a bus for half an hour. When the bus comes, there are so many other buses and cars on the road that the bus moves very slowly. The underground train is quick but a bit expensive and often crowded.

I traveled to work by bus for about four years. I often arrived at work late and tired. Then one day, about two years ago, a workmate said, “I go to work by bike, why don’t we travel together?”

“Because my bike is old,” I answered, “and there are so many buses and cars on the road. I always feel frightened.”

“You needn’t worry about this,” said my friend. “If you follow me and we ride slowly, you’ll be fine.”

Although we went slowly, we arrived at work quickly. The bus ride took forty minutes and the bike ride took ten minutes less!

The next day I bought myself a new bike. Now I don’t feel afraid. I love cycling to work, and I feel fit and well.

Many people think in the same way as I do. That’s why you see a lot of bikes on the road. Who knows, perhaps in the future we’ll have roads for bicycles only. I hope so!

76. What can we see on the road if we visit London now?

77. How did the writer go to work three years ago?

78. How long did it take the writer to go to work by bike?

79. What did the writer hope to have in the future?

80. Why do more and more people travel by bike nowadays?

第三节 短文改错(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

Mark Twain liked playing jokes about his friends. One day, one of his friends lost their wallet and asked him to buy the train ticket for him. “And I don’t have enough money to pay both your ticket and mine,” Mark Twain said. The friend didn’t know what to do it. “Let’s do this,” Mark Twain says, “You can get on the train and when the conductor come to check the ticket you can hide under my seat.” Lately, however, when the conductor came to check the ticket, Mark Twain gave him two tickets—one for himself and other for his friend.
