Long Cycle Stable Operation of Syngas-to-EG Unit at Xinjiang Tianye Company
Till September 2013, the phase I project for production of 50 kt/a ethylene glycol from the calcium carbide furnace offgas has been smoothly operating for 8 months with the operating load reaching 90%. The yield of premium grade EG has exceeded 92% and the product purity has reached 99.94%. It is learned that this is the first in China commercial unit for manufacture of EG from syngas that has realized a longcycle, stable and high-quality operation.
This project adopts the CTEG technology jointly introduced by the consortium composed of the Japanese Ube Industries Ltd. and the HighChem Co., Ltd. The test data have revealed that this product can substitute for the petroleum-based EG at 100% degree, because the final product marketed has been unanimously praised by the downstream customers. Currently, the Xinjiang Tianye Company has started the construction of the phase II project — a 200 kt/a unit for production of EG from calcium carbide furnace offgas, the commissioning of which is scheduled for the second half of 2014.
