小朋友们，新的一年又到了！新年又称元旦，你们知道元旦的来历吗？我国和世界上大多数国家和地区采用公历纪年法，把1月1日定为新年的开始，称作“元旦”。“元”有始之意，“旦”指天明的时间，也通指白天。元旦，便是一年开始的第一天。“元旦”一词，最早出自南朝梁人萧子云《介雅》诗：“四气新元旦，万寿初今朝。”

January 1stis New Year’s Day,the first day of the year on the modern Gregorian calendar as well as the Julian calendar used in ancient Rome.New Year’s Day is a global public holiday.元月一日是新年，是现代公历和古罗马儒略历中每一年的第一天。新年是一个全球性节日。

The Romans dedicated this day to Janus,the god of gates,doors,and beginnings.The month of January was named after Janus,who had two faces,one looking forward and the other looking backward.罗马人把这一天献给Janus——掌管门和开始的神。元月就是以Janus来命名的。传说中他有两张脸，一个往前看，一个往后看。

Most countries in Western Europe officially adopted January 1stas New Year’s Day somewhat before they adopted the Gregorian calendar.西欧大多数国家官方早在他们采用公历前就把元月一日作为新年了。

The old year,for better or worse,is gone for good.January 1strepresents the fresh start of a new year and the passing of the previous year.Radios,televisions and newspapers start to say good-bye to the old year and to plan and expect the coming new year in early December.不管是好还是不好，旧的一年永远过去了。元旦代表过去一年的结束和新的一年的开始。广播、电视、新闻报纸早在12月就开始回顾过去的一年和展望即将到来的新年。

Many people make New Year’s resolution on New Year’s Day,planning and promising something new in the coming year.很多人都在元旦做自己的新年规划，计划或打算新的一年要开始做的事情。

庆贺新年的开始，欢度元旦可说是世界各地的普遍习俗。在我国，元旦是国定假日。由于世界各国所处的经度位置不同，各国的时间也不同，因此，“元旦”的日期也有不同。如大洋洲的岛国汤加位于国际日期变更线的西侧，它是世界上最先开始的一天的地方，也是最先庆祝元旦的国家。而位于国际日期变更线东侧的西萨摩亚则是世界上最迟开始新的一天的地方。按公历计，我国是世界上第12个开始新年的国家。
