One World One Dream
The Olympic Games is a grand gathering of all human beings, which will bring about unprecedented development opportunities for the host country and the host cities, as well as the opportunity for them to re-mark themselves on the world map. The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games is a collision and mergence of eastern and western civilizations. China, an ancient country with an accumulation of more than 5,000 years of continuous civilization, will showcase its most fascinating brilliance to the whole world in August 2008 and give the world many joyful surprises.
As a host city for the sailing competitions of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, beautiful Qingdao is enthusiastic with passion. This young city with only a hundred years of history is alive with modern growth and vitality, but also imprinted with the deep brand of ancient eastern civilization. Through one hundred years of continuous development, Qingdao has become one of China's most important central cities economically, and is also an outstanding tourism city rich in history, culture and rare natural beauty. At the same time, Qingdao is a city that is closely connected with sailing sports. The earliest sailing sports event held in Qingdao can be traced back to 1904 and the earliest modern sailing competition recorded in China.
During the 1950s, with the establishment of the Qingdao Navigation School, sailing sports were gradually popularized throughout the New China. As the place of origin of China's modern navigation sports, Qingdao has witnessed the history of China's modern sailing sports.
In 2001, the cooperation between Qingdao's Hundred Year Centenary and the hundred years of Olympic history started a new chapter in our city's development. "Olympic Qingdao" thus has become the most valuable honor cherished by our eight million citizens throughout greater Qingdao. Building up our brand name as a "Sailing City" and hosting the Olympic Regatta with special characteristics and a high level of competence has become the most persistent idea for all natives of Qingdao. Through seven years of sustainable efforts, Qingdao has constructed the international top-grade gyms for the Olympic Regatta, improved the urban environment quality in full swing, and had the idea of participating in the Olympics and dedicating to the Olympics rooted in people's hearts. Through the exercises and experiences gained during the 2006 and 2007 International Regattas, Qingdao now has enough ability to host an Olympic Regatta with "special characteristics and high levels of professionalism."
The grand 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will kick off soon. Qingdao will simultaneously usher in this holy moment with historic significance. On behalf of our eight million citizens, I hereby warmly expect that athletes from all countries will set sail on the beautiful Fushan Gulf; and we warmly welcome all friends from home and abroad to visit Qingdao, experience the Olympics, enjoy Chinese customs and cuisine, and experience the special charm of our city and our citizens.
And now as our clocks rapidly tick off the imminent countdown to the Beijing Olympic Games, let's pray for realization of the true meaning of the Five-Ring Olympic banner: "ONE WORLD, ONE DREAM." Good luck to the Olympics! Good luck to Beijing! Good luck to Qingdao!
