Hes an old cobbler(修鞋匠) with a shop in the Marais a historic area in Paris. When I took him my shoes, he at first told me: “I havent time. Take them to the other fellow on the main street; hell fix them for you right away.”
But Id had my eye on his shop for a long time. Just looking at his bench loaded with tools and pieces of leather, I knew he was a skilled craftsman(手艺人). “No,” I replied, “the other fellow cant do it well.”
“The other fellow” was one of those shopkeepers who fix shoes and make keys “while-U-wait”—without knowing much about mending shoes or making keys. They work carelessly, and when they have finished sewing back a sandal strap(鞋带) you might as well just throw away the pair.
My man saw I wouldnt give in, and he smiled. He wiped his hands on his blue apron(围裙), looked at my shoes, had me write my name on one shoe with a piece of chalk and said, “Come back in a week.”
I was about to leave when he took a pair of soft leather boots off a shelf.
“See what I can do?” he said with pride, “Only three of us in Paris can do this kind of work.”
When I got back out into the street, the world seemed brand-new to me. He was something out of an ancient legend, this old craftsman with his way of speaking familiarly, his very strange, dusty felt hat, his funny accent from who-knows-where and, above all, his pride in his craft.
These are times when nothing is important but the bottom line, when you can do things any old way as long as it “pays”, when, in short, people look on work as a path to ever-increasing consumption (消费) rather than a way to realize their own abilities. In such a period it is a rare comfort to find a cobbler who gets his greatest satisfaction from pride in a job well done.
1. Which of the following is true about the old cobbler? ____.
A. He was equipped with the best repairing tools
B. He was the only cobbler in the Marais
C. He was proud of his skills
D. He was a native Parisian
2. The sentence “He was something out of an ancient legend.”
(in Paragraph 7) implied that ____.
A. nowadays you can hardly find anyone like him
B. it was difficult to communicate with this man
C. the man was very strange
D. the man was too old
3. According to the author, many people work just to ____.
A. realize their abilities B. gain happiness
C. make money D. gain respect
4. This story wants to tell us that ____.
A. craftsmen make a lot of money B. whatever you do, do it well
C. craftsmen need self-respect D. people are born equal

A recent study, published in last weeks Journal of the American Medical Association, offers a picture of how risky it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal accident as a teenager driving alone. By contrast, the risk of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional passenger.
The author also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased greatly after 10 pm, especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night accident.
Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with “really stupid behavior” than with just a lack of driving experience. “The basic problem,” he says, “is that adults who are responsible for licenses fail to recognize how complex and skilled a task driving is.”
Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to deal with the problem is to have states set up so called graduated (分等级的) licensing systems. A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove himself able to drive in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving with passenger restrictions at night, before graduating to full driving privileges.
Graduated licensing systems have reduced teenage driver crashes, according to recent studies, about half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place, but only 10 of those states have restrictions on passengers. California is the strictest, with a novice (新手) driver forbidden to carry any passenger under 20 (without the presence of an adult over 25 ) for the first six months.
1. Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage? ____.
A. Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after 10 pm
B. A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car
C. Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night
D. A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at mid- night
2. According to Robert Foss, the high death rates for teenage drivers are mainly due to ____.
A. their driving at night B. their improper way of driving
C. their lack of driving experience D. their driving with passengers
3. A suggested measure to be taken to reduce teenagers driving
accidents is that ____.
A. driving in the presence of an adult should be made a rule
B. they should be forbidden to take on passengers
C. they should not be allowed to drive after 10 pm
D. the licensing system should be improved
4. The present situation in about half of the states is that the
graduated licensing system ____.
A. is under discussion B. is about to be set up
C. has been put into effect D. has been perfect

If you think a Web site designed especially for complaining sounds unique, then think again. If you have a complaint, there are hundreds of sites that allow you to get it off your chest. Sites exist for complaining about such things as defective(有缺陷的) products, government inefficiency, and offensive advertising. There are even sites where you can complain about anything that bothers you, including love, family, or just the weather. These Web sites wont actually do anything about your problem; they just let you blow off steam. Heres a sampling of complaints people have written:
1. Something I cant stand is pencils! They need to be sharpened after every page you write. And then dont you hate it when they start to make a scratching noise?
2. Have you ever noticed that in most schools you have chairs with armrests to write on attached to the right-hand side of the chair only? Where are the desks for left-handed people? Its very uncomfortable for us “lefties” to use these desks made for right-handed people!
3. I see red every time I get my credit card bill from the bank. Theres always a check for a large amount attached with an invitation to sign it and spend it on “anything I want”. I have enough sense to tear it up and throw it away, but I bet a lot of people dont. They dont realize that when they use the “free check”, the expense gets put on their credit card bill. Boys, they must be surprised when they get that bill!I think that banks shouldnt be tempting people with those checks.
4. It isnt fair that the U.S. dominates the Internet! I go to fill in a request for a catalog or a prize or a free offer, and I find its limited to residents of the United States. I live outside the U.S., and its frustrating!
1. If you have a complaint and go to some Web sites, ____.
A. your problem will be settled
B. you wont probably be angry any more
C. you are allowed to check your chest
D. you will be bothered
2. Whats the problem with those checks that people complain about? ____.

B. People usually throw them away
C. People are surprised to get the checks
D. People thought the use of checks were free, but actually they have to pay for it
3. Why do people complain about the Internet? ____.
A. People cant fill in a request for a free offer
B. People cant get a free offer in the United States
C. People outside the United States cant get a free offer on the
Internet
D. Its limited to the people outside the United States
4. What would be the best title for the passage? ____.
A. Excellent Web Sites B. Complaining Online
C. Sampling of Complaints D. Writing Out Your Complaints

It has been said that all Africans are born with musical talent. Because music is so important in the lives of many Africans and because so much music is performed in Africa, we probably think that all Africans are musicians. The impression is strengthened when we look at ourselves and find that we have become largely a society of musical spectators (观众). Music is important to us, but most of us can be considered consumers rather than producers of music. We have records, TV sets, concerts and radios to meet many of our musical needs. In most situations where music is performed in our culture its not difficult to tell the spectators from the performers, but such is not often the case in Africa. Alban Ayipapa, a Kasena musician from northern Ghana, says that when his flute and drum group is performing, “Anybody can take part.” This is true, but Kasena musicians recognize that not all people are equally able to take part in the music. Some can sing along with the drummers, but few can drum and even fewer can play the flute with the group. Its fairly common in Africa for there to be a group of expert musicians surrounded by others who join in by clapping, singing, or somehow adding to the totality of musical sound. Performances often take place in an open area (that is, not on a stage) and so the lines between the performing actors and the additional performers, active spectators and passive spectators may be difficult to draw from our point of view.
1. The difference between us and Africans, as far as music is
concerned, is that ____.
A. most of us are consumers while most of them are producers of arts
B. we are musical performers and they are expert musicians
C. most of them are active spectators while most of us are passive spectators
D. we are spectators while they are passive performers
2. The underlined word “such” in the passage refers to the fact that ____.
A. music is performed and spectators take part
B. music is performed and people only watch and hear
C. people cant tell the spectators from the performers
D. people have records, TV sets, concerts and radios to meet their musical needs
3. The passage is mainly about ____.
A. the importance of music to Africans
B. the differences between Africans and other people
C. the relationship between African music and other music
D. a characteristic feature of African musical performances

What should you think about in trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. Knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metal work or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills.
If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs(笨拙) when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be sorry for it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
1. Which of the following best sums up the first paragraph? ____.
A. The importance of doing well at school
B. Using school performance to help to choose a career
C. The importance of being good at all subjects
D. The indirect value of schoolwork
2. The writer thinks that for a student to have a part-time job is
probably ____.
A. a waste of time that could have been spent on study
B. useful for his future work
C. a good way to earn extra money
D. a good way to find out his weak points
3. According to the passage, if a students school record is not good, he ____.
A. will be a complete failure in his future work
B. may not find a suitable job
C. will regret not having worked harder at school
D. may do well in his future work
4. Which subject is supposed to have no direct value for job-hunting according to the author? ____.
A. Mathematics B. English
C. Technical drawing D. History
5. The whole passage is mainly on ____.
A. choosing a career according to what one is skilled in
B. acquiring knowledge by working hard at school
C. finding ones strong and weak points
