Want to explore new cultures, meet new people and do something worthwhile at the same time? You can do all the three with Global Development Association (GDA). Whatever stage of life you’re at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you’ll create positive changes in a poor and remote community. We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Most of our volunteers are aged 17—24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25—75. They are quite important in the safe and effective running of our programs. We have such roles as project managers, mountain leaders, and communication officers.

Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community’s access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.

Not only will you help young volunteers to develop personally, you’ll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who’ll become your lifelong friends.

This summer we have both 4-week and 7-week programs:

GDA ensures that volunteers work with community members and local project partners where our help is needed. All our projects aim to promote the development of poor and remote communities.

There is no other chance like a GDA program. Join us as a volunteer manager to develop your own skills while bringing benefits to the communities.

Two British teachers have broken the world record for the longest journey in a tuk-tuk after pulling their failing vehicle for 43 miles. Richard Sears and Nick Gough traveled 37,500 kilometers around the world and passed through 37 countries. They did this to support grassroots education project in Africa, Asia and South America.

The pair, who set off from London, thought their expedition (远征) was over when the vehicle started to fail. When the tuk-tuk broke, they were only 43 miles from their destination. They decided to pull it the rest of the way. The tuk-tuk, which weighs 800 kilograms, was pulled in turns by Richard and Nick over three days. On arrival in Chepen, Peru, they discovered a mechanic who specialized in tuk-tuks and managed to fix it.

The pair were back on the road and aiming for their next goal. Along their journey they had to tackle deserts and jungles. They also survived close encounters with elephants in Uganda and Botswana and an accident in Malaysia. The greatest hardship on the tuk-tuk was the mountain ranges lying in their path, including the Alps, the Himalayas and the Andes.

Nick and Richard uncovered 9f4b67ec0922898ccd4f8644f859ee4bsome inspirational projects across Africa, Asia and South America. The pair established The Tuk Tuk Educational Trust, a UK registered charity. Talking about their motivation, Richard said, “The world’s leaders have made a commitment to achieving universal primary education but, in spite of this pledge (誓言), over 57 million primary-aged children worldwide are still out of sa91a7247e06ffd78bcda0bb3f05eef33chool; many more are in school, but still cannot access quality learning opportunities.”

A new technology project in southern Greece is helping visitors experience the ancient birthplace of the Olympic Games.

The project used Augmented Reality (AR) to recreate temples and competition areas in the ancient city of Olympia. It was recently launched in the city, one of the world’s major archaeological (考古的) sites. AR is a technology that can project computer-created imagery onto special eyeglasses. Through the eyeglasses, the images appear along with other physical objects in the environment.

The project is a partnership between American software maker Microsoft and Greece’s Ministry of Culture and Sport. The ministry helped Microsoft map and build virtual representations of Olympia. The city was used for nearly a thousand years to host the games in ancient Greece that served as the model for the modern Olympics. The experience provides users the chance to virtually walk through the ruins (遗迹) of Olympia. At the Olympic Museum in Athens, people can also use Microsoft’s AR headsets for a similar experience.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis joined a group of schoolchildren who were using the app for the first time. “I’m absolutely thrilled that we’re able to present to the world a completely new cultural experience utilizing technology to recreate the ancient world of Olympia,” Mitsotakis told the media.

Students from a local middle school looked at statues and structures that were brought to life on their phones. One of the children, Panagiotis Christopoulos, called the project “impressive”. “I think it can help with teaching in schools,” the student said. They were able to virtually visit inside and outside settings to explore where ancient Olympians had competed in different sports.

The project began with a series of imaging flights to help map areas across Olympia. Microsoft is to build several data centers in and near Athens as part of a $1 billion investment agreement with the Greek government.

28. What can users do with the eyeglasses?

A. Watch 3D movies about Olympic Games. B. Take photos of the ruins of Olympia.

C. Take part in the virtual Olympic Games. D. Be on a virtual visit to the ruins of Olympia.

29. What does the underlined word “utilizing” in Paragraph 4 mean?

A. Using. B. Changing. C. Replacing. D. Recycling.

A. Establish data centers. B. Help government plan the city.

C. Develop advanced operating systems. D. Make an agreement with other companies.

31. What can be the best title for the text?

A. Greece Will Open a New Olympic Museum B. Digital Project Brings Olympia to Life

Teenagers who travel around the world alone have been making headlines quite often. A young person alone in a dangerous situation attracts attention and sponsors. Young sailors also attract various views. For example, Jessica Watson was asked by the government to cancel her voyage (航行), yet the Prime Minister called her “a hero for young Australians” when she returned. It seemed there is confusion about the competence and independence of young people.

The popular psychologists tell us that teenage brains are likely to make wrong judgments. But such ideas often do not apply to specific individuals. Between the ages of 14 and 18, teenagers vary greatly in their abilities. The amount of independence that each is allowed should be determined not simply by their age but by discussion with the related responsible adults. Some teens are certainly inexperienced and capable of childish mistakes, but the ones who attempt dangerous journeys normally do so by winning the confidence of hard-headed and well-qualified adult supporters.

But it’s also wrong to think that any 16-year-old can desire to get achievements as unusual as Jessica Watson’s. Watson calls herself “an ordinary girl who had a dream”. Her intention is to encourage teenagers but this idea can have the opposite effect of making them feel not good enough because great achievements are beyond them. Should all teens have such dreams? Actually, individuals face varying circumstances that restrict (限制) their dreams.

Teenagers who travel around the world alone should not be judged by preconceived (事先形成的) views aboa061e3867683e1cfbcbe3401dd7cf05f60d7532eef7201cebafdd82d91e8ca68ut young people. Nor should young “ordinary” teenagers feel pressure to long for extraordinary personal goals. In fact, I believe the example of solo sailing overstresses individualism. The teenage years are when most of us “ordinary” people learn that we can achieve great things in cooperation with others.

32. What can we learn about Jessica Watson?

A. She was criticized by the government. B. She canceled her voyage.

C. She has traveled around the world. D. She made a successful voyage.

33. What can be inferred about teenagers from Paragraph 2?

A. They are confident in themselves. B. They make decisions on their own.

C. They always make wrong judgments. D. They need supports of responsible adults.

34. Who does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. Parents. B. Teenagers. C. Psychologists. D. Adults.

35. What is the text mainly about?

A. Divided opinions on young adventurers. B. Problems faced by adventurous teens.

C. Various ways to become independent. D. Pressure to achieve personal goals.
