Marei S.B., 25, got her first taste of her dream career this past summer in Colorado, where sheinterned (实习) at Woodward, Inc., an American designer, manufacturer (生产商), and serviceprovider of control system components for aircraft engines for some of the world’s largest aircraftcompanies. Marei was part of the platform development engineering team at Woodward, helping trainthe operations and engineering teams on crucial aircraft components.

“This was my very first internship, and I was amazed by the aerospace (航空航天) industry,”Rd9gXA1GNjAQ18+qopWsDw== shesaid. “We were always crunched under deadlines, and customers, understandably, requested largework orders. There was always a pressure to perform your best and provide them with the bestpossible units made at our plant. This taught me a lot about how demanding and fast-paced theindustry is, but it also confirmed and reassured me that I really want to work in the aerospaceindustry.”

The internship required Marei to use both her technical engineering and interpersonal skills. Sheworked with both the engineering and operations teams at Woodward. “The operations team didn’tnecessarily have engineering degrees, so I had to break down technical terms into everyday words thatwe use,” she said. “It taught me to be specific and precise. I’d rather be more repetitive and ensureeach step is correct than have to rework the entire process.”

Marei also helped train the teams through product displays and visual work instructions on howto manufacture specific products. That brought its own unique thrill, as the instructions she createdcould be used long after her internship ended.

Marei is planning to return to Woodward this winter. She’ll have another semester’s worth ofengineering knowledge, which will further her into the career she’s always wanted. “I got to applymany of the things I learned at Harvard,” she said. “The internship taught me the technical knowledgeI’d need to learn from my courses that could be applied here.”

Where am I? What am I doing? If you’re one of my 500 friends online, you’ll always be thefirst to know. My phone and laptop are never out of touching distance, so I’m endlessly checkingthrough all my social networking apps—whether I’m having a coffee, on my way to school, watching TV... even when I’m in the shower. I have a never-ending flow of messages and updatesfrom all the people I associate with online. Yet the truth of the matter is: I feel lonely.

I’m not the only person who feels this way. According to research, over two-thirds of youngpeople find it easier to make friends online than it is “in real life”. I’m a shy person, but I’m wiredup every day, like most of my friends. On the surface, phones bring us closer together. But inreality, my mind is always a million miles away.

I often feel depressed (沮丧的), dissatisfied and alone. Since I spend so much time socializingonline, I even become a procrastinator. I keep postponing things that are important in my real life:homework, tasks, connecting with my friends and family members in a meaningful way. It’s funnythat my friends and I talk non-stop online so much, but we end up having nothing to say when wemeet.

What is really worrying is that no one I know, including myself, could go cold turkey. I can’teven imagine going without social networking for a week—think of all the important appointments, invitations and news updates you would miss! Alcoholics (酗酒者) who want to quit drinking canavoid drinks, but how do we give up our phones? After all, I need it for my studies because myteachers and classmates need to contact me at any time. So, that’s the problem with socialnetworking. We’re hard-wired in, but we’re more disconnected than ever.
