My last birthday was special, and I will never forget (忘记) it.

I was on summer holiday in Guangdong. I thought I would have a wonderful birthday, but I wouldn’t. At first, my mum had a bad cold. So she had to stay in bed. I had to leave her at the hotel and go to a dinner party with Dad.

Today, many people celebrate birthdays in similar ways. There’s a birthday cake, balloons, candles, and maybe some gifts. Do you know how and where these birthday celebrations started?

Birthday candles

Some people believe (认为) that the history of putting candles on a cake began in ancient Greece (古希腊). People put candles on a cake to show their love for the moon goddess (女神), Artemis. They put candles on the cake like the moon. Then they made wishes before blowing out the candles. They believed that the gods and goddesses could know their wishes.

Today, many believe that a silent wish will come true if someone blows out all the candles in one go.

Birthday song

When you hear someone sing the “Happy Birthday” song, you know someone is celebrating his or her birthday. So where did the song come from? It is believed that the song came from a school teacher’s greeting song named Good Morning to All. And it was written by American sisters Mildred and Patty Hill in 1893.
