中译英策略与方法（二十八）

“高”这个字，常常与其他的字词搭配，表示标准、程度、等级，如“高质量”“高水平”“高标准”“高端”“高等”“高级”等。根据《现代汉语词典》第7版，“高”的释义不少，其中有两个与我们的讨论相关：一是“在一般标准或平均程度之上”；另一个是“等级在上的”。对“高质量”“高水平”“高标准”，通常的翻译分别是high quality、high level、high standards，似乎已经成为定式。但是仔细分析一下这几个词在具体语境下的使用，可以发现其中的“高”在很多情况下可以灵活处理，并非都要翻译为high。下面对这几个词分别进行讨论。

1. 高质量

说到“高质量”，意思似乎比较清楚，就是“高”或者“好”的意思。我们先从语用的角度分析一下这个词的用法。如果说一个产品有质量，或者一件事情强调质量，一般不会说“质量产品”“质量环境”，也不会说“有质量产品”“有质量环境”，而是加一个“高”字，简练地表述其中的内涵，比如“高质量产品”“高质量环境”。从这个角度看，“高质量”在很多情况下就是“有质量”的意思，或者“好”“优秀”等意思，不一定都要翻译为high quality。下面看看“高质量”在一些句子中的使用和翻译情况：

没有五六年的严格训练，这么高质量的动作是做不出来的。A movement of this quality would not be possible without five or six years of rigorous training.

通过我们完备的产品和服务，我们已经把公司发展成一个诚信、高效、高质量的企业。Thanks to our wide array of products and services， we have built a company that is known for integrity， efficiency and quality.

这两句里面的“高质量”都理解为“有质量”，简单地处理为quality，没有再用high加以修饰。从表述效果上来说，这样显得稍微简练一点。再看下面几个例句：

学生在期末考试之前要保证高质量睡眠。Students need to get a good night’s sleep before taking the final exams.

这批服装的制作采用了高质量的面料。This run of clothing is made with top-notch fabrics.

这家酒店提供高质量的服务，员工热情周到，房间整洁舒适。This hotel offers top-tier service. Its staff are attentive and friendly， and the rooms are clean and comfortable.

高质量的环境可以改善人们的生活质量。People living in a clean and healthy environment may enjoy a higher quality of life.

会议讨论的重点是城市总体规划阶段如何创造高质量的城市空间环境。A major item for discussion at the meeting was plans for well-designed and functional spaces in the master urban planning for the city.

学校的首要任务是培养社会需要的高质量的实用人才。The primary mission of the university is to develop well-rounded and skillful graduates who can meet the needs of the society.

这几句中，对“高质量”的表述采用了不同的方式处理，主要是探索一下除了high quality之外还有什么选择。当然，这也不应被看作唯一的标准，特别是后面三句中的“高质量的环境”“高质量的城市空间环境”“高质量的实用人才”，在不同的语境下内涵也可能不同，因此采取的翻译方式可能也是多样的。

“高质量发展”是一个使用频率相当高的词组，通常翻译为high-quality development。对于这样翻译是否地道，已经不需要再纠结了，因为不管怎么样，这个词组使用频率太高，已经被广泛接受。不过在具体语境下，“高质量发展”的翻译也可以有不同的处理方式。通常有两种情况，一个是概念式或概括性的表述，即将high-quality development或high-quality growth作为单独的概念直接使用，例如：

加快教育高质量发展，推进新一轮一流学科建设工程。New initiatives will be launched to develop world-class academic disciplines， driving high-quality growth in education.

中国经济已经由高速增长阶段转向高质量发展阶段。The Chinese economy is shifting from a focus on rapid expansion towards high-quality growth.

另一种是叙述或描述性的表述，也就是将“高质量发展”的内涵描述出来，例如：

我们这个行业这些年发展不错，但接下来，我们需要实现高质量发展。The industry has expanded quite a lot in recent years， but we will need to focus more on quality than size as we pursue further growth.

概括性和描述性表述是专业译者需要了解的理念和策略。中文经常出现的情况是，一个词组，例如关键词，使用频率很高，作为一个概括性很强的词组用于各种语境，很容易形成高度对应的翻译，译入英文时反复使用。这样做虽然比较保险，但在具体的使用中，不考虑语境，采用统一对应的翻译，有时会使译文显得空洞。

2. 高水平

《现代汉语词典》第7版对“水平”的解释，其中之一是“在生产、生活、政治、思想、文化、艺术、技术、业务等方面所达到的高度”。那么，“高水平”显然就是达到“较高的水平”，或者与上面的“高质量”用法相似，表示“有一定水平”的意思。“水平”应该是一个内涵比较丰富的词汇，可以指所达到的高度，也可以指能力、质量、标准、要求等等，与“高质量”相比，好像更难找到一个统一的对应词。例如：

你爸爸能给你起这么有寓意的名字，说明他水平还是很高的。Your father must be a very learned man to have given you such a meaningful name.

他在会议上发了言，但是他的讲话没有什么水平。He spoke at the meeting， but he didn’t really know what he was saying.

这两句根据“水平”使用的语境作了灵活处理。再看看“高水平”的使用情况。对于“高水平”的翻译，很容易想到high level这个词组，但是分析一下两个词组的用法，就会发现两者的内涵在大多数情况下并不相同。

先看看high level 的用法：high-level talks（高级别会谈）、high-level contacts（高层接触）、high-level committee （高级别委员会）、high-level clearance （高级别保密许可）、 high-level meeting（高级别会议）、high-level delegation（高级别代表团）、high-level political forum（高级别政治论坛）、high-level position （高级职位）。这些词组的意思很明显，都是表示较高的“级别”或者“层次”，而中文“高水平”表示较高的“程度”或“能力”，两者相差甚远。下面看看“高水平”在具体语境下的翻译：

2024年一些高校停止了高水平运动队的招生。In 2024， some universities decided to stop recruiting for their athletic programs.

学校可以为本科生参加高水平国际会议提供资助。Financial support is available from the university to sponsor undergraduate students’ participation in major international conferences.

刚刚毕业的博士生短时期内要在高水平期刊上发表还是很不容易的。For newly minted PhD graduates， publishing in a leading （top-tier） journal could be a distant goal to achieve.

我校将加快建设高水平本科教育，全面提高人才培养能力。We will accelerate our efforts to build high-quality undergraduate education， for an overall improvement of the university’s capability to fulfill its mission.

在建设第一期30家高水平医院的基础上，遴选新增20家实力较强的医院进行重点建设，明年实现全省21个地级以上市高水平医院全覆盖。There will be leading hospitals in every one of the 21 major cities in the province next year， with 30 top-tier hospitals already up and running， and 20 additional reputable hospitals slated for further investment and upgrades.

在两国共同努力下，双边关系保持高水平发展。With the joint efforts of the two countries， their bilateral relations have been growing steadily in all areas.

以高质量发展促进高水平安全，以高水平安全保障高质量发展。It is important to make sure that high-quality development fosters holistic security， which in turn ensures high-quality development.

实现高水平科技自立自强，扩大高水平对外开放。We must build up greater self-sufficiency in science and technology as we pursue a broader engagement with the rest of the world.

这几个例句中的“高水平”主要还是表示“能力”方面，并非是“级别”，因此没有简单地处理为high level， 而采用了不同的译法。“高水平发展”“高水平安全”和“高水平开放”的内涵比较广泛，虽然也包括层次，但更多的是指范围更为全面、广泛。例句的翻译，作为一种尝试，抓住其主要意思进行了描述性翻译。

3. 高标准

“高标准”的对应词最常见的是high standards。不过，在具体翻译过程中，是否可以使用high standards作对应式的翻译， 还需要考虑各方面的因素。例如：

我们这个项目按照行业最高标准实施。We have implemented the project to the highest standards of the industry.

这里用highest standards应该没有什么问题，每个行业都有可以量化的标准。但是，下面这个例句的情况有所不同：

我们按照高标准筛选公共演讲比赛参赛人员。We followed high standards when selecting candidates for the public speaking competition.

这里用high standards似乎不太合适，因为这种筛选可能更多地采用非量化性标准，因此使用criteria可能更为合适：We applied rigorous criteria when selecting candidates for the public speaking competition.

或者：We followed a rigorous selection process when choosing candidates for the public speaking competition.

再看一个例句：

作为一位老师，他坚持用高标准要求学生，激发他们的潜能。He’s a teacher who sets high standards for his students， pushing them to their full potential.

这句话里面，high standards已经有了比喻的意思，指较高的期望，因此这样翻译没有什么问题。但是，也有人译作：As a teacher， he encourages his students to follow high standards， pushing them to their full potential.

这里用了follow high standards， 将high standards放到可以实施的语境中。如此一来，英文中就没有比喻的意思了，而standards也可能理解为具体的量化标准。

再看看下面几句话：

我们公司坚持为客户提供高标准产品与服务。The company has made it a mission to deliver high-quality products and services to our customers.

多年来，这位画家一直以高标准进行创作，不敢懈怠。For years， the painter has been steadfastly committed to excellence， never giving himself an inch to slack off.

把客户的满意度作为我们客服的高标准。Customer satisfaction is the primary benchmark for our service.

自由贸易试验区积极发挥制度创新功能，对标国际高标准经贸规则，形成150项制度创新成果。With its initiative for institutional innovation， the pilot free trade zone has introduced 150 improvements in rules and procedures in line with prevalent international trade and economic rules.

建立开放、竞争有序的高标准市场体系。It is important to put in place an open， well-regulated and well-functioning market system.

这几个例句中的“高标准”都有不同的处理方法，主要是考虑到“高标准”的内涵，以及英文中用词的搭配。总的来说，中文“高”字的字面意思往往给人一种涉及层次或等级的感觉，但其内涵可能就是表示“有质量”“有水平”，或者“优秀”“出色”，等等。不分语境，直接套用high 这个词，也许能达到表层意思的一致，但深层意思却常常产生偏差。
