FITUR 2024
International Debut of a National Tourism Brand—“Nihao! China”—Featuring Chongqing Culture & Tourism
From January 24 to 28, FITUR 2024, the 44th edition of the International Tourism Trade Fair, took place at IFEMA MADRID in Spain. Thanks to the world-renowned fair and favorable visa policies, Chongqing further enhanced its inbound tourism marketing efforts and ensured its place in major European markets. Therefore, the city improved its international popularity and reputation, and accelerated its pace of building itself into a world-renowned tourist destination. With all these endeavors, Chongqing could better tell “Chinas stories” and write a “Chapter about Chongqing.” In collaboration with provinces and cities such as Sichuan, Guangdong and Hubei, the Chongqing Municipal Commission of Culture and Tourism Development made its debut at the large international tourism fair as a national tourism brand named “Nihao! China.” The brand promotion was jointly organized by the Oficina Nacional de Turismo de China en Madrid (China National Tourist Office, Madrid) and China Cultural Center, Madrid.
FITUR is a global leading tourism fair, with its 44th edition attended by 806 exhibitors and 9,000 companies from 152 countries and regions. A dozen of tourism product trading and business cooperation events were held at FITUR 2024. Concurrently, brand promotion events for participating countries took place.
On the first day of FITUR 2024, Chongqing culture and tourism events were presented to the public. The confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, and the Three Gorges on the Yangtze River provided a themed backdrop for the booth of Chongqing. Representative items of national intangible cultural heritage were on display, including local creative cultural products, intangible cultural heritage products and tourism products, such as paintings on ramie textiles, Liangping New Year woodblock prints and Sichuan double-sided embroidery. Thanks to these creations, the booth was crowded with an endless stream of visitors.
The most eye-catching crafts were Impressive Chongqing (a set of leave paintings which are representative items of Chongqings intangible cultural heritage), Popular Chongqing (creative cultural paper-cut postcards), and Mountain City Chongqing (hand-painted postcards). At the booth, videos were played at all hours to show visitors the distinct natural beauty and culture of Chongqing.
Chongqing students studying in Spain volunteered to enthusiastically introduce the natural beauty, delicious food, customs and culture of their hometown, and hand out Chongqing attractions maps and travel guides to visitors. Special giveaways were popular. Representatives of European travel agents admired Chongqings cultural and tourism resources at the booth, expecting to promote collaboration.
Chongqing is abundant with distinct tourism resources, listed in the “Global Top 10 Fastest-Growing Tourism Cities” by the World Travel & Tourism Council and ranking first. Besides, it was rated in the “Top 10 Tourist Destinations” and “Global Top 10 Most Promising Travel Destinations” by international authoritative travel journals, Frommers and Lonely Planet. Chongqing also goes viral on social media platforms, such as YouTube and TikTok, becoming the most popular city among international tourists.
The relevant persons-in-charge from Chongqing Municipal Commission of Culture and Tourism Development stated that Chongqing is a noted historical and cultural city, dubbed “Magic Mountain City” and “8D City.” Chongqing will showcase and promote its excellent cultural and tourism resources to international tourists by participating in influential international tourism fairs, expecting more people to know about and fall in love with it. All these efforts are to improve the popularity, reputation and international influence of Chongqing as a cultural and tourism brand.
