Cuckoos (布谷鸟) are masters of cheating. When it comes to raising young, they dont spend the energy building a nest, protecting eggs or feeding children. Instead the female passes these roles on to other birds. They dont raise their own young. Usually, they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, fooling other birds into thinking the cuckoo eggs are theirs.
To succeed in doing this, a female cuckoo watches over her chosen nest to observe feeding times. When the host parent leaves its nest in search of food, the cuckoo quickly lays her eggs among those already in the nest. Sometimes, she will even destroy and remove one of the hosts eggs to make room for her own.
Cuckoos are medium-sized birds with long tails, and often have gray or brown backs. When they hatch (孵化) and begin to grow in a hosts nest, the difference between the two can be obvious to an onlooker. Often the cuckoo is twice the size of its host parents, but still continues to receive food from them.
The cuckoo imposter (冒名顶替者) is usually the only baby bird that the host parent has to care for. This is because when the cuckoo hatches after around 11 days, it gets rid of all the other eggs in the nest. It will lift each egg onto its back before throwing them one by one over the edge of the nest. Even then, the non-biological parent will continue to treat it as one of its own.
Also, cuckoos have developed to produce eggs that are similar in color to their main hosts. This reduces the chances of eggs being attacked. Female cuckoos have been known to take host birds attention away after laying their eggs by producing a noise similar to Eurasian sparrowhawks, scaring birds away from returning to the nest and allowing time for the cuckoo to make her escape unnoticed.
1. What do mother cuckoos usually do when it comes to raising their young?
A. Attend to eggs. B. Build a new nest. C. Rely on other birds. D. Learn feeding skills.
2. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Other cuckoos. B. Baby cuckoos. C. Its host parents. D. Its birth parents.
3. What can be inferred about the cuckoo imposter?
A. It looks much larger than the other eggs.
B. It throws all the other eggs out of nests.
C. It usually hatches out earlier than the other eggs.
D. It often makes a noise to scare other birds away from the nest.
4. The text mainly tells us how cuckoos ________________.
A. fool other birds B. produce eggs C. destroy others nests D. protect their children

A
When LeeAnn Kriegh moved to Bend, Oregon, in 2012, she fell in love with the trees, birds and flowers. Then she began to read nature guidebooks.
“There wasnt a book that met my needs,” Kriegh said. “I had all the field guides. And they were wonderful, but they didnt tell me stories or teach me the basics and those were what I needed.” Krieghs book, The Nature of Bend, was published in 2016. And Kriegh wanted to encourage others to become published authors. She spent about 2,000 hours working on her guidebook, in which she covered 350 species (物种).
“You should be ready to spend time on the topic you write about,” Kriegh said. “Its a lot of work, and you have to have a strong liking for your subject,” she added, “or its going to be put aside.”
At first, Kriegh began by sending a plan to a book publisher. Half a year passed before the publisher said no to Kriegh. What he said was that central Oregon seemed too small a market. Kriegh remembered his words. During that time she made a decision that she would take care of all the books elements on her own rather than depend on another publisher.
Being a self-publisher, she not only picked up the check for printing, but she also paid for the other parts like marketing that were paid by a publisher. Kriegh worked with more than 40 photographers and local naturalists, and read through many scientific papers for the book.
Shes heard a lot of positive remarks about the way shes shown facts and stories about these species that help people feel connected and put a smile on their faces.
Kriegh is now working on The Nature of Portland. She hopes it will attract people in cities.
“The purpose of the book is to get people more interested in nature,” Kriegh said. “The more you know about it, the more you care about it and work to take care of it.”
1. What guidebook does Kriegh need?
A. It is affordable. B. It tells stories or basics.
C. It covers various species. D. It is easy to understand.
2. What might inspire Kriegh to continue writing books?
A. Her dream of becoming an author. B. Her hope of being successful.
C. Her interest in the subject. D. Her love of her city.
3. Why did Kriegh publish the book on her own?
A. To take full control of the book. B. To pay the publisher.
C. To enlarge the market in Oregon. D. To publish the book as soon as possible.
4. What can we learn about The Nature of Portland?
A. It calls on people to protect wildlife. B. It encourages people to write.
C. It makes people feel connected with nature. D. It is especially popular with people in cities.

Snow leopards (雪豹) are so hard to photograph that scientists arent even sure how many of these endangered animals still live in the wild.
The Snow Leopard Conservancy (SLC) set up 20 cameras in Russia in 2010 to learn more about the big cats. After a full six months, they had exactly zero picture! Thats when the organization understood they needed help. And the only people who could help them in finding the leopards were the people from whom they wanted to protect the animals—local hunters.
Hunting snow leopards is against the law in Russia, but in the terrible climate of Siberia, the few people living there had to turn to poaching (盜猎) to feed their families.
In 2013, Russian naturalist Sergei approached Markov, a local hunter, and told him his project. Markov agreed to set up the camera where he knew he would find leopards, and it worked.
Markov, once a poacher, works full time for the conservationists now and has 10 cameras tracking leopards. “I visit each camera once a month. I have known this whole area since I was a child,” he said proudly.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) began working with other local villagers in 2015. The village would be paid 40,000 rubles at the end of the year if the image of a snow leopard is caught. WWF also rents horses from the villagers so that they do not need to make money by poaching anymore.
Changing guns for cameras has made a big difference in the lives of these former poachers, the village, and the Russian snow leopards. The number of snow leopards has been rising and their population is expected to recover to normal levels within 10 years.
5. Why was no picture of snow leopards taken in six months?
A. The cameras failed to work. B. Snow leopards got endangered.
C. Local hunters destroyed these cameras. D. The scientists poorly prepared for them.
6. What did Sergei want Markov to do?
A. Find out the poachers. B. Work for the SLC.
C. Take pictures of snow leopards. D. Repair cameras in the forest.
7. Why did the WWF begin working with local villagers?
A. To tell them not to hunt animals. B. To help them make a living.
C. To get some pictures of snow leopards. D. To buy their horses at a low price.
8. How can we describe the WWFs work with the villagers?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Old habits die hard.
C. Kill two birds with one stone. D. Curiosity kills the cat.
