Cave Diving

When Stefano Brunelli was growing up on the Italian island of Sardinia, he used to spend his summers swimming in the ocean. “The coastline here is very special,” he says. “There are lots of caves in the rocks. My friends and I used to dive into these caves to look around them.”
Stefano has now turned his childhood hobby into his job. “I became a professional diving teacher. I teach other divers how to go into these amazing underwater places safely. And its important that they dont harm the sea life or damage the rocks in the caves.”
Cave diving can be more dangerous than other types of diving. “If theres a problem, you cant go straight up for air,” Stefano explains. “You have to go back out of the cave the way you came in. You can get lost down there. So for safe diving, you need a guide rope that you can follow to find the way out. You have to take lights with you. You also have to take enough air, because you could get trapped in a cave.”
After many years of cave diving, Stefano still loves this sport. “When Im underwater, it feels like visiting another world. I love taking people down there and showing them these strange, beautiful places beneath the ocean.”
