David Chipperfield is the latest winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the famous award that has gone in the past to the likes of Frank Gehry, Oscar Niemeyer and Zaha Hadid. Unlike those well-known architects, Chipperfield creates understated buildings, including many elegant and dignified museums, such as the Saint Louis Art Museum in the United States, Turner Contemporary in the United Kingdom, and Liangzhu Cultural Museum in China.

In 1997, Chipperfields firm was picked to repair Berlins Neues Museum. Built in the mid 1800s, the museum was bombed nearly to pieces during World War II, and then sat deserted in East Berlin. The building had stood as a ruin for more than 50 years. History had somehow left it behind.

Chipperfield preserved the remains as part of the design. That was an incredibly controversial decision and it put him in dialogue with the citizens of Berlin. The process was an example of the cooperative effort that Chipperfield sees as central to his practice. Finally, Berlins Neues Museum has become an amazing modernist icon.

His aesthetic(美感) is timeless rather than trendy. As the Pritzker experts wrote its quotation, “We do not see an instantly recognizable David Chipperfield building in different cities, but different David Chipperfield buildings designed specifically for each circumstance.”

How is the 2023 Pritzker winner feeling about being described as not “instantly recognizable”? Chipperfield was happy with that, because the idea of the architects signature has become a rather overstated ambition.

A Chipperfield building is one that thoughtfully blends into its context. Its also a building thats very simple and precise. It isnt something that comes at you all at once but something thats very measured. Precision can be used to describe Chipperfields practice.
