Profile pictures

Definition (定义)

A profile picture is the image that represents a social media account in all its interactionson a platform. Profile pictures are displayed next to the account names on posts, commentsand mentions, depending on the platform.

Profile pictures make a visual impact on social media users and potential customers, making it important for businesses to select the right images. For a company, a profile pictureshould be the best part of that brands image (品牌形象), usually combining its logo.

How to select a profile picture

Profile pictures should be easily recognizable as belonging to your business. While usingan independent logo is the most common strategy, some brands use a lifestyle imagethat includes their logo.

Other brands rely more on a person—a recognizable“face of the brand”. If this isyour marketing strategy, your profile image should be creative and attractive:

·Use professional photography and design.

· Colorful images are better at catching peoples eyes.

· Photos should be taken in bright light.

· Show a smiling face.

If you have multiple social media outlets, use the same profile picture on every platform to create a consistent brand image.

Above all, use highquality images. Keep in mind a few basic rules:

· Images should be clear.

· Make images simple and visually striking.

· Always meet requirements of the platforms image size.

If the platform allows, add a description to your profile picture that includes links to your website.

1. Why is it important for a business to choose a correct profile picture?

A. It is equal to a brands image.

B. It stands for a social media platform.

C. It has a visual impact on potential customers.

D. It becomes a necessity for the business.

2. Which one will you choose if your business depends on a“face of the brand”?

A. A professional cartoon image.

B. A family photo of your team.

C. A welldesigned blackandwhite photo.

D. A photo of a spokesperson with a confident smile.

3. Where can this text be found?

A. In a textbook. B. In a business plan.

C. In an academic report. D. On a business website.

Recently, many ecommerceplatforms, have been uncovered that they are cheatingtheir frequent customers. Their ways are pretty clever. When there are new users or conservativeold users, they will give a quite appealing price to attract them into registering andbuying goods. However, their big data is not that friendly to the stable users and frequentvisitors. The system always offers them a higher price for the same products or service. How does this happen? According to the data analysis, the system knows clearly thatalthough they feel the price is high, they will finally pay the bill. By collecting and analyzingusers profiles, buying habits and other information, big data recommends the sameproducts to different users with different prices.

Companies also try other ways to make money, making online consumption far moreworrying. For example, video websites always offer 120 seconds advertisements, whichdrives people crazy. And even if you pay for the membership to get rid of the ads, you haveto“enjoy”a 15second“private”ad. By broadcasting them, companies make huge profits—second to the membership fees. Also, owning a 100 Mbps network, you still put up with theslow speed when you are downloading a song. You have no choice but to become a VIPwhen you seek high quality services. Users seem to be lambs (羔羊) among wolves. Eventhough they say,“Since you have money, Ill charge you more”, we cant do anything aboutit.

It pains us that we havent figured out a way to deal with the problem. The only thingwe can do is replacing our iPhones with Android phones if we want to buy membershipcards, and applying for new accounts if we want cheaper hotels. Not finding a way to fightback, we cant do anything but accept them passively.4. How does big data serve companies according to the text?

A. By being kind to all users.

B. By giving a discount to stable users.

C. By analyzing the usersshopping habits to attract new users.

D. By recommending the same products with higher prices to regular users.

5. What do we know from the second paragraph?

A. Membership can rid you of all the ads.

B. Only by being a VIP can you get a better service.

C. The slow download speed is due to your poor network.

D. Advertising income is the biggest income for video websites.

6. What is the authors attitude towards the chances of finding a way to fight back?

A. Uncertain. B. Casual.

C. Negative. D. Positive.

7. What is the main idea of the text?

A. The big data provides helpful information for users.

B. We have to accept online consumption as it is.

C. There exist many online consumption traps.

D. Regular customers are richer.

A new report from the UK says that more than 1 in 5 teens there spend five hours ormore per day on social media. And the heavier users of social media go to bed later and getpoorer quality sleep. The new study was based on selfreportedsurvey data from nearly12,000 teenage participants in the UK Millennium Cohort Study.

Megan Moreno, a researcher at the University of WisconsinMadison, says that socialmedia is too often described as either entirely good or bad, when the reality is more complicatedfor teens.“Social media may have its problems, but it is the way that they stay intouch with each other,”she says.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the study found a link between high social media usage andpoor sleep patterns. Specifically, teens who report heavier social media use go to sleeplater. And, the study authors note, late bedtime is linked with poorer academic and mentalhealth outcomes.

Holly Scott, a researcher at the University of Glasgow, isnt sounding the alarm. Shesays,“Its easy to look at the results of this and think,‘We should just get teenagers tospend less time on social media.I think thats an understandable response, but what I reallyencourage people to do is look beyond that.”She says people should pay attention tothe“important emotional and cognitive and social factors”at play with when teenagers areusing social media.

Scott emphasizes that the study is pointing to a correlation between social media andpoor sleep, but not necessarily demonstrating cause and effect.

“Certainly some teens do say that they struggle to get off social media at night—theymight be worried about missing out on things, or affecting their friends by not answeringmessages—and they stay up late from that,”she says.“But maybe for some of those young people they have a natural later body clock, and are passing their free time at night onsocial media until theyre ready to fall asleep.”

8. Whats the purpose of the new study in the UK?

A. To find the benefits of using social media.

B. To know the effects of using social media.

C. To know teenagers habits of using social media.

D. To prove the growing popularity of social media.

9. What attitude does Megan Moreno take towards social media?

A. Critical. B. Positive.

C. Objective. D. Confused.

10. What does Holly Scott think of social medias causing poor sleep?

A. Its interesting. B. Its impossible.

C. Its beyond doubt. D. It lacks evidence.

11. What is the best title for the text?

A. How to sleep well tonight

B. Social media is wasting our time

C. Teens may be losing sleep over social media

D. Make use of social media in an effective way

D

While broccoli (花椰菜) is typically considered a safe vegetable for dogs, there arestill risks that you should know about.

Is broccoli healthy for dogs? Generally, yes, broccoli is safe and even beneficial foryour dog to eat, but its still a vegetable that you should only feed to your dog in moderation. When it comes to how healthy broccoli is for your dog, it has some benefits that youdefinitely want to take advantage of during snack time. Broccoli is filled with vitamins andminerals, low in calories and packed with fiber (纖维) to help the digestive (消化的) system.Theres a reason that its just as good for us as it is for dogs!

When giving your dog broccoli, its important that you always feed it to your dog plain—meaning you arent giving your dog broccoli thats been seasoned or cooked in butter or oil. This is because spices (香料) and fats arent good for your dog and can cause an upsetstomach.

Of course, its always best to talk with your vet before adding new foods to your pupsdiet. Your vet can give you a good idea on how much and how often your dog can enjoybroccoli.

In order to improve your memory and absorb more information, you need to break yourstudying up into manageable pieces and review what youve previously learned in each newpiece.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

We may meet many teachers in our life, but the teacher who impresses me most in mylife must be Mrs Bartlett. She is the one who can not only see through the ordinary to discoverthe potential of individuals, but also put it to the full play.

I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth grade world history class when Mrs Bartlettannounced a new project. In groups, we were to create a newspaper around the culture wewere studying.

On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs Bartlett informed us that she would take into considerationthe names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I had no doubtthat I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociable people in theclass, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.

The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stoppedtalking as Mrs Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When shereached group three, Missys name was called.“So Im in group three,”I thought. Thesecond, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!

Then I heard it,“The last group: Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina.”The moment Iheard my name Karina announced, I could feel the tears well up in my eyes. Turningaround, I glanced through all my new partners. How could I face being in that group. Theywere all misfits—the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always coveredby skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who wore weird clothes. Oh, howbadly I wanted to be with my friends.Paragraph 1:
