The man who wants a garden fair，

Or small or very big，

With flowers growing here and there，

Must bend his back and dig.

The things are mighty few on earth

That wishes can attain.

Whateer we want of any worth

Weve got to work to gain.

It matters not what goal you seek

Its secret here reposes：

Youve got to dig from week to week

To get Results or Roses.

埃德加·艾伯特·格斯特（Edgar Albert Guest，1881—1959），美国诗人，他的诗充满温情，闪烁着灵感，散发着伤感，并因此声名远扬。格斯特生于英格兰的伯明翰，后于1891年和他的家人一起迁居底特律。1895年，他开始在底特律《自由报》当一名送稿付印的小工人，后又在该报社担任各种职务，直到去世。
