英语应用文写作——元旦晚会通知

假定你是学生会主席李华，你校将组织一场元旦晚会（New Year party），请你用英语写一则书面通知，告知你校的国际交换生参加，内容包括：（1）时间、地点;（2）晚会节目安排;（3）欢迎参加。

Notice

With the New Year approaching， a fancinating⑴ New Year party will be organized⑵ from 18：00 to 21：00 on Dec. 29th. Exchange students can participate in it， too.⑶

The party will⑷ consist of two parts. First， each class will put on an excellent performance based on students’taste， whose topic ranges from adapted historical acts to sing and dancing.⑸As for the second part， we will have some quizes⑹， and winners will be given some delicate gifts⑺.

Your participation⑻ is sincerely welcomed.

【劉教授批改】

（1）拼写错误，正确的拼写是fascinating。

（2）organize用在这里不准确，organize an event or activity的意思是make sure that the necessary arrangements are made（含有“事先安排好”的意思），但后面却有具体的晚会举办时间（18：00 to 21：00），改为held更合适。

（3）这句话是汉语“交换生也能参加”的字面翻译，属于汉语式表达。首先，情态动词can用在这里不合适：（1）You use “can” to indicate that someone has the ability or opportunity to do something.（有能力做某事）;（2）You use “can” to indicate that someone is allowed to do something.（允许某人做某事）。显然，这里需要表达的并不是这两层意思，而是“邀请”的意思，改为：Exchange students are （warmly） invited to participate in it. 其次，too用在这里也不合适。这个衔接词的前面并没有值得衔接的成分。如果前一句有哪一类学生应邀参加，后一句可以用too。

（4）在发布这个通知的时候，晚会的内容应该是已经确定好了的，是一个事实（fact）。这里用will反而含有不确定性。

（5）这句话的问题较多。首先是选词：excellent属于评价词，用于自身有自我吹嘘之嫌，最好用事实性的形容词，如long-prepared， carefully-designed等。Based on students’ taste这里的students指代不清楚，究竟是哪些同学的品位？可以改为each class will put on their long-prepared and choice performance ... 这里的choice是形容词，意思是“appealing to refined taste（精选的，高品位的）”。sing改为singing;historical acts改为historical plays， acts在这里容易误解为“行为”。其次是结构：whose从句显得臃肿，没有必要使用，改为：each class will put on their long-prepared and choice performance， such as adapted historical plays， singing and dancing. 或each class will put on their long-prepared and choice performance， adapted historical plays， singing and dancing， just to mention a few.

（6）quiz的复数形式为quizzes。

（7）delicate这个词不仅有“精美的”意思，还含有“容易损坏的”意思（exquisitely fine and subtle and pleasing; susceptible to injury），改为：precious/valuable/memorable/interesting/selective/beautiful/fanciful gifts。

（8）participation的意思是“sharing in the activity of a group， engagement， involvement”（参与活动当中）。但从通知的内容看，并未要求交换生准备节目，而只是出席晚会，因此改为attendance。

【刘教授总结】

这则通知比较准确地表达了要求表达的内容，但缺少告知晚会的地点。语言上的主要问题有：

（1）选词不准确，大多基于汉语的意思来选词。建议今后记忆单词时，多记英语的释义。

（2）情态动词can， will的掌握不到位，建议平时阅读时多注意情态动词使用的语境。

（3）因刻意追求语法结构的多样性，导致内容表达不清晰、不简明。应用文的功能是清晰、准确地传达信息，复杂的句子结构适得其反。
