Mar. 16, 2022 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 16 held a phone conversation with his Indonesian counterpart, Joko Widodo. China and Indonesia are both representatives of major developing countries and emerging economies, Xi noted in the phone talks. In the face of major global changes and the COVID-19 pandemic, both rarely in a century, Xi said, the two countries have moved forward hand in hand and risen to challenges, established a new pattern of bilateral cooperation on the “four-wheel drive” of political, economic, cultural and maritime affairs, and carried forward the main theme of solidarity against the pandemic and common development.

02. China, Cambodia agree to advance Belt and Road cooperation

Mar. 18, 2022 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen on March 18, with both sides agreeing to promote Belt and Road cooperation. The two sides should engage in high-quality joint Belt and Road construction, speed up the construction of major projects such as highways, airports and special economic zones, and expand cooperation in emerging fields such as finance and digital economy, Xi said. Xi noted that with the joint efforts of both sides, China-Cambodia relations have withstood tests and grown even more unbreakable.

03. Chinese investment in Cambodia rises in 2021 despite pandemic

Mar. 4, 2022 (Xinhua) — Chinese investment in Cambodia had increased significantly in 2021 despite the negative effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, which truly reflected Chinese investors trust in Cambodias business environment, officials and experts said on March 4. Cambodia attracted fixed-asset investment of US$ 2.32 billion from China last year, up 67% from US$ 1.39 billion in the year before, according to a report from the Council for the Development of Cambodia. China remained as the top foreign investor to the Southeast Asian nation, accounting for 53.4% of the total investment of US$ 4.35 billion the kingdom approved last year, the report said.

04. China-Laos railway marks 100 days of success

Mar. 14, 2022 (China Daily) — The China-Laos Railway has handled more than 360 cross-border freight trains and helped transport more than 280,000 metric tons of international cargo since operations began three months ago, China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd. reported on March 12. Goods transported along the route have reached countries and regions including Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Bangladesh. It has also handled more than 1.8 million passengers, the company said. The railway, a landmark project of high-quality cooperation in the Belt and Road Initiative, marked its 100th day of operation on March 12.

05. China, Malaysia begin to impose RCEP tariffs on each other

Mar. 18, 2022 (China Daily) — As the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement entered into force for Malaysia on March 18, China and Malaysia begun to impose RCEP tariffs on each other, which will bring new economic cooperation opportunities, said a report by CCTV News. Within ASEAN, Malaysia is expected to be the largest beneficiary of the agreement in terms of gains in exports, with a projected US$ 200 million increase, according to the countrys International Trade and Industry Ministry.

06. Malaysia eyes post-pandemic recovery as RCEP comes into force

Mar. 18, 2022 (Xinhua) — With the coming into force of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) in Malaysia on March 18, Malaysia eyes benefits the agreement will bring in its post-pandemic recovery efforts, according to a Malaysian official. In his remarks at the forum “China-ASEAN in RCEP Implementation: Are Businesses Ready for RCEP?” Malaysian International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Lim Ban Hong said the agreement will allow the country to accelerate its efforts to overcome the economic disruption caused by COVID-19.

07. China-aided medical building to help improve Cambodias healthcare quality

Mar. 21, 2022 (Xinhua) — Situated in the capital of Cambodia, the newly-established Cambodia-China Friendship Preah Kossamak Hospital will play an important role in improving the quality of healthcare services in the Southeast Asian nation. Built by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd. under a Chinese governments grant, the 11-storey building, which includes a helipad on its roof, has 400 beds and is well equipped with high-tech medical equipment. The building is divided into different units, including surgery, outpatient services, emergency, medical technology, hospitalization, and logistics.

08. Fan, Chen are Smash hits in Singapore

Mar. 22, 2022 (China Daily) — Singapore Smash came to a thrilling conclusion on March 20 as all-conquering Team China swept the five titles on offer at the inaugural World Table Tennis (WTT) event. Chen Meng and Fan Zhendong emerged victorious in the womens and mens singles respectively following seven-game thrillers in front of a packed Infinity Arena. World No. 2 Chen beat fourth-ranked world champion Wang Manyu 4-3 for the womens title, while mens world champion Fan defeated two-time Olympic singles champion Ma Long 4-3.
