The poem When This is Over is now an educational tool which is studied like the works of Homer. Professional writer Laura Fanucci wrote the poem to cheer herself up. To her surprise, it went popular online. Thats the old news.

The new news is that the poem has become an education assignment for a humanities class in the South Bronx. It has inspired about 80 sixth?graders to write their own version(版本).

The students are enrolled in the American Dream School, a charter school for English language learners and immigrant students. Teachers Daniel Zauderer and Niki DeGiorgio introduced their class to the poem, assigning them to study it with the aim of cultivating gratitude through poetry. These students stay at home with laptop computers, through which they connect with their classmates and teachers.

Fanuccis poem is basically a list of everyday activities she cant do because of social distancing, and that shell never take for granted again. It ends with an inspirational message of hope that we all will rise from this ordeal (磨难) to be better people.

The teachers challenged the students to brainstorm what they had taken for granted and what they hope people will learn, and to express themselves in a poem of their own. The class followed Fanuccis format (格式), reworking the poem. The students showed some love for DeGiorgio and Zauderer in their version of the poem, with the line: “Seeing my teachers face to face.”

“Working remotely during this pandemic is tough some days,” DeGiorgio said in a Facebook post. “What brings me hope and joy is the beautiful hearts, minds and words of my students.”

Parents can often be concerned about giving eggs to their babies, as they commonly cause food allergies. If you have a family history of allergies, you will need to be more cautious about the introduction of new foods. Always talk to your GP first if you have any concern.

However, it is best to offer your baby well?cooked eggs before 12 months of age. A single egg contains essential minerals like copper, zinc, calcium and iron. It also has proteins, cholesterol, fat, fatty acids, vitamins D, B12 and E, choline and folate. All of the above nutrients are essential for the healthy growth and development of infants. Delayed introduction of these foods has been shown to increase the chance of developing a food allergy.

As the baby is around six months old, mash (搗碎) one hard?boiled egg and serve it to your baby. For a more liquid consistency, add breast milk or water. From the eight?month mark, scrambled egg pieces make a fantastic finger food for your little one. When youre offering new foods to kids, its a good idea to do it during the day instead of the evening, so you can keep an eye on response if they have an allergic reaction.

Food containing raw or minimally cooked eggs can contain salmonella (a type of bacteria), which is why its advised to wait until your child is 12 months or older before serving half?cooked eggs. When starting solids, you should make the introduction of different foods gradually, both in terms of quantity and the speed of feeding. Ensure it consists of very basic, natural foods, such as fruit and vegetables, which can be managed by their still?sensitive digestive system.

Remember that encouraging your little one to accept a wide variety of healthy foods early on in his or her life will have plenty of benefits later, when he or she begins to express his or her personal eating preferences.

8. Why are parents more cautious when feeding eggs to babies?

A. Babies may be allergic to them.

B. Babies are too young to digest them.

C. Parents have no other guidance.

D. Parents have a family history of allergies.

9. What can well?cooked eggs bring to babies?

A. Enough energy. B. Necessary nutrition.

C. Rare minerals. D. Enough bacteria.

10. Why should you choose daytime to give new foods to kids?

A. It will bring kids more nutrients.

B. It will decrease allergic reaction.

C. It sounds reasonable and safe.

D. It makes it easier to monitor the kids allergic reaction.

11. What does the author convey in the last paragraph?

A. Children should take foods regularly.

B. Childrens eating habits should be regulated.

C. Eating has a great influence on childrens life.

D. Childrens personal preferences should be concerned.

A man in Laruns, southwestern France, uses whistling as a form of speech. Like others in the Canary Islands and elsewhere, local people have learned to whistle their language to communicate across long distances. Linguists are studying whistled speech to help understand which sound elements are essential to comprehension.

Whistled speech has arisen in at least 80 languages around the world, especially in rugged, mountainous terrain or dense forest, where ordinary speech doesnt carry far enough.

Whistled speech can be understood up to 10 times as far away as ordinary shouting can, Meyer and others have found. That lets people communicate even when they cannot easily approach close enough to shout. On La Gomera, for example, a few traditional shepherds still whistle to one another across mountain valleys that could take hours to cross.

Whistled languages work because many of the key elements of speech can be mimicked in a whistle, says Meyer.

Learning to whistle a language you already speak is relatively straightforward. Diaz Reyess Spanish?language whistling students spend the first two or three months of the course learning to make a loud whistle with different pitch. “In the fourth or fifth month, they can make some words,” he says. “After eight months, they can speak it properly and understand every message.”

In essence, people listening to whistled speech are piecing together its meaning from fragments of the full speech signal. Linguists know surprisingly few details about how the brain does this.

Despite their interest to both linguists and casual observers, whistled languages are disappearing rapidly all over the world, and some have already vanished. Modernization is largely to blame, says Meyer, who points to roads as the biggest factor. “Thats why you still find whistled speech only in places that are very, very remote, that have had less contact with modernity, less access to roads,” he says.

12. Why are the linguists studying whistled speech?

A. To think of it as a special language.

B. To have a knowledge of how to use it.

C. To know how people understand it well.

D. To know the sound elements.

13. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?

A. By giving examples. B. By making comparison.

C. By analyzing facts. D. By introducing a topic.

14. What do we know about whistled language from paragraph 5?

A. Its a developed language. B. Its a widely?used language.

C. Linguists are still studying it. D. Linguists find it easy to learn.

15. What does the underlined word “vanished” mean in the last paragraph?

A. Existed. B. Arisen.

C. Disappeared. D. Improved.

If you find yourself having trouble completing tasks, try turning off your cellphone, signing out all social media sites and going somewhere quiet. 第二节 (满分25分)

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One day, I found a wallet on the street. The wallet contained only three dollars and a very old letter. The envelope was worn and the only thing on it was the return address. I started to open the letter, hoping to find some information. Then I saw the date—1990, and the signature—Beatrice. The letter was written several decades ago.

Then I made every effort and found out that Beatrice was now working in a hospital. I showed her the letter. The second she saw the letter, she took a deep breath. “Young man, this letter was the last contact I ever had with Henry. He is my only brother. I loved him very much. I was only 16 at the time and my brother is two years younger than me. If you can find him, tell him Im still looking for him,” she said and tears began to well up in her eyes. “Mother is waiting for him to come back home.”

When I walked out of the building with the wallet in my hand, the guard of the building recognized the wallet, and with his help, I finally found its owner, Henry. I handed the

wallet to Henry and he said, “Yes, thats mine! It must have dropped out of my pocket this

afternoon.”

“I read the letter in the hope of finding out who owned the wallet,” I said. The smile on his face suddenly disappeared. He asked, “You read that letter?” “Not only did I read it, but also Beatrice read,” I replied. He suddenly became excited. “Beatrice? You know where she is? How is she? Please tell me,” he begged. “Shes fine. She has been looking for you,” I said softly.

He grabbed my hand and said, “Sir, you know she is my only sister in this world and Ive always missed her.”

Henry and I took the elevator (電梯) down to Beatrices room. I walked over to her. “Beatrice,” I said softly, pointing to Henry, who was waiting with me in the doorway. “Do you know the man?”

注意:续写词数应为150左右。

Paragraph 1:

Beatrice adjusted her glasses, looked for a moment, but didnt say a word.

Paragraph 2:

About three weeks later, I got a call at my office from Beatrice.
