“Chengdu is really a city you do not want to say goodbye to.” This is the true feeling of Gustavo Díaz, Consul General of Chile in Chengdu. On July 8, 2021, the Consulate General of Chile in Chengdu was opened. Consul General Gustavo Díaz said, “I feel much honored and fulfilled to be able to open the Consulate General in Chengdu during this difficult period when the COVID-19 pandemic is not completely over. I really enjoy my life in Chengdu.”
More and more diplomats are fond of Sichuan. On November 8, 2021, the outgoing reception of Ran Peleg, the second Consul General of Israel in Chengdu, was cancelled due to pandemic precautions. A few days later, the reporter received a farewell letter from the consul general and his wife, which was full of nostalgia for and reluctance to leave Chengdu. The letter was accompanied by a pamphlet entitled The Pelegs’ Happy Bashu Trip, which vividly recorded their three colorful years in Sichuan.
In the Joint Statement on Deepening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Argentina signed by the two sides on February 6, 2022, Argentina proposed to establish a consulate general in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China, which reflects its desire to deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen subnational exchanges. Chengdu will welcome another consulate.
So far, 21 foreign countries have been approved to set up consular offices in Chengdu, making the city rank third in Chinese mainland and the first in the central and western region of China.
Ran Peleg: “Three enjoyable and fulfilling years”
“Thank you for your support and company. My family and I have had three enjoyable and fulfilling years in Chengdu.” This is what the couple wrote in the farewell letter in November 2021. In the three years, Ran Peleg and his family members traveled around the streets and the surrounding areas of Chengdu.
“Chengdu is my favorite city in China,” said Ran Peleg in a media interview. He has developed a liking for Chengdu when he, together with his girlfriend, visited the city for the first time in 2006. He had just graduated from college. They travelled around the city and its surrounding areas by motorcycle. The city witnessed a great moment in his life — the backpacker proposed to his girlfriend.
In 2018, Ran Peleg arrived at Chengdu again as the Consul General of Israel in Chengdu and a father of four lively and lovely children together with his wife — the girlfriend he proposed to here 12 years ago. As travel enthusiasts, the family planned traveling as an essential part of their holiday life.
In the three years, they traveled all over Sichuan: museums, art galleries and tourist attractions such as Jiuzhai Valley, Huanglong, Mount Emei and Mount Qingcheng, or even scenic areas known only to locals. They also often planned short trips, greenway biking, mountain cross-country, or barbecues on the side of a brook. During the three years, they visited well-known mountains, rivers and cultural relics. “We fell in love with the mountains, rivers, streams, museums, ancient towns...,” his wife wrote in the pamphlet.
Apart from traveling, Ran Peleg is also interested in Sichuan cuisine: Dandan noodles, hot pot, Mapo tofu...Among them, Dandan noodles are his favorite. On the first day when he just arrived in Chengdu as the Consul General in Chengdu, a steaming bowl of Dandan noodles instantly relieved his fatigue after a long journey. In his spare time, he often sipped a covered bowl of tea and listened to Sichuan people’s chatting with each other at teahouses. In the past three years, he has deeply integrated himself into the life of Sichuan people and enjoys it. Ran Peleg said, “I enjoy sitting in a teahouse in Chengdu and having a cup of tea leisurely. Bamboo chairs, tiny square tables, traditional Chinese tea sets and skilled tea mixers all make me feel a strong flavor of Chengdu.”
Lee Kwang Ho: “I’m so glad to work in Chengdu”
“In the Chengdu streets we wander and wander, until all the lights go out but we still linger...” On September 22, 2021, the singing of Chengdu, a Chinese folk song, by Lee Kwang Ho, Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Chengdu, climaxed the National Day Reception of the Republic of Korea held at the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Chengdu. Singing the song at such an important event speaks to Lee’s affection for Chengdu.
“I’m so glad to work in Chengdu,” said Lee Kwang Ho, the Consul General of the Republic of Korea in Chengdu at his first press conference in early 2021.
Sichuan’s profound cultural heritage contributes the most to the happiness of the consul general, who loves Chinese history and culture.
Lee, keen on reading the books about the Three Kingdoms since childhood, was thrilled by those cultural landmarks such as Wuhou Shrine, Jianmen Pass, and Langzhong Ancient City in Sichuan, which is the center of the culture of the Three Kingdoms. Not long after arriving in Chengdu, he visited Wuhou Shrine. During his tenure, he plans to visit each of those landmarks and immerse himself in the history and culture of the Three Kingdoms.
In Sichuan, there are also the former residences of famous poets Li Bai and Du Fu. During his first week in Chengdu, he went to Du Fu’s Thatched Cottage, where “a large area of well-arranged flowers and trees constituted a unique space with plaques and couplets engraved with poems from the great poet.”
He is also amazed at the rapid development in Chengdu. After work, he often goes to IFS and Taikoo Li, which are seething with the people, feeling the vitality of the world-class business center.
Lee Kwang Ho said, “Chengdu is an appealing city where the past and present, history and future, nature and cutting-edge technology coexist.”
The myriad delicacies in Sichuan also make him feel happy. His favorite Sichuan cuisine is Mapo tofu, which is the first of its kind he ate in the province. When talking about food, Lee Kwang Ho was so excited that he asked the reporter to recommend some.
Lee said he drinks at least one bottle of Chinese baijiu at a time. At leisure time, he invites friends to enjoy delicious food and a glass of baijiu produced in Sichuan, which is a great time for him in the foreign land.
Mahmood Akhtar Mahmood: “Love traditional Chinese culture”
On December 12, 2021, Sichuan hosted a cultural creation activity themed Hanfu, Tai Ji & Mutual Learning, where diplomats, international students and nearly 100 enthusiasts of Hanfu, the historical clothing of the Han people, participated. Mahmood Akhtar Mahmood, Acting Consul General of Pakistan in Chengdu, cheerfully put on the Hanfu outfit and followed Liu Suibin, the head of Qingcheng School, to practice Tai Ji. He looked straight ahead with a serious expression, feeling the charm of traditional Chinese culture in every gesture and motion of Tai Ji.
Afterwards, Mahmood tasted Chinese tea and appreciated the opera performance. He said the immersive experience of mutual learning made them feel the considerable charm of traditional Chinese culture.
In his point of view, “mutual learning” runs through the development of traditional Chinese culture and reflects the integration and development of the Chinese nation in philosophy, ideas and techniques. He added that the similar concept of “mutual learning” can also be found in the culture of Pakistan, adding that cultural mutual learning has existed between the two countries since ancient times.
Mahmood Akhtar Mahmood holds Chinese traditional culture in high esteem. Proficient in Chinese, English and Urdu, he has read many Chinese books, including The Art of War by Sun Tzu and the Analects of Confucius, especially the Poetry of the Tang Dynasty. He told the reporter that he was translating the poems of the Tang Dynasty in Urdu and planned to publish them in a book.
Living in Sichuan, the most dynamic region in southwest China, Mahmood has witnessed the booming and modern economy here, especially in the fields of science and technology including information technology. “Sichuan has always been open to the world, and actively integrated itself into the development along the Belt and Road,” Mahmood said, adding that with superior location advantages, the province plays an important role in establishing international economic relations and opening up in southwest China.
