Styles of Clothing
Some ten years ago, the clothes the Chinese people wore were simple and monotonous. Men used to wear blue and gray tunics and trousers, and women used to wear blue or black blouses and skirts. When you were in some public places, you seemed to be in a forest of trees of the same kind in the same colour and appearance.
But now people have changed their custom in their clothing. Men begin to look for clothes which make them look more handsome; while women begin to dress themselves mor beautifully. When you are in a crowd of people, you seem to be in a garden of colourful flowers.
This change is the result of the policy of reform and opening up to the outside world in China. People dare to wear what they like to. And they become richer than before and can afford the varieties of clothes they want. They have no fear that they would be called bourgeois.

I, Too, Have Some Genius
Everyone has some genius. Some like music, others are good at maths or enjoy physics. I too have some genius. I like singing best.
I sing when I am free, especially when I am alone. That way my voice becomes beautiful little by little. During the holidays, the villagers often ask me to sing for them. They enjoy my songs very much. I am very happy because I can do something for others. We are ordinary men, but we have genius more or less, We must use it to do something for the people. If everyone can use his genius to do something for others, I believe that the world will be more beautiful.

My Second-grade Teacher
My second-grade French teacher ruined my first experience learning a new language. At first we were only expected to master simple phrases such as “Hello!”,“How are you?” and “What is your name?”. But soon after we had to memorize poems and songs. This may sound like fun and games, but our teacher was like a drill sergeant.
As the term went on, her expectations grew more and more unreasonable. Each afternoon she lined us up at the top of the staircase to say“aurevoir”. The three-oclock bell rang and we still stood there. We had to perfect our accents and strain our little voices to please her. One of us usually burst into tears out of fear or frustration at her criticisms.
Because of these horrible experiences, I forget my early French. However, I will never forgive or forget my second-grade teacher.

A Careless Person
According to his mother, Roger is a careless person. He always forgets something else while hes doing something although he denies it. He insists that hes careful, but hes simply unlucky. So he gets into trouble everyday.
Yesterday was an unlucky day, according to him. After a days work, he felt tired and came to a park near his home to enjoy the quietness here. He bought a newspaper at the newsstand, and then seeing an empty bench across the path, he came up and wanted to read his newspaper there. He did look at the bench for a while to see whether it was clean. But he didnt notice the sign behind the bench which says“WET PAINT”. He sat there reading the newspaper for a few minutes, then left for home feeling much satisfied that nothing unhappy had happened to him that day. People behind him were laughing at the painted stripes on his clothes.

Asking for Trouble
This is what happened to John outside his house last night. It was midnight(about one Oclock in the morning)when John returned home. He felt about his pockets but failed to find his key. He had left it in his office. He knocked at his front door trying to wake up his wife, but she was sound sleep. Suddenly an idea occurred to John that a ladder, would be of great help to him. He went and got a ladder from his garden, put it against the wall, and began climbing towards the bedroom window. He was almost up to the window when a policeman appeared below. He ahouted at John and began to pull him down the ladder because he thought John was a thief. Fortunately, the shouting woke up Johns wife. She opened the window instantly and explained who he was and apologized to the policeman. The policeman then said to John with a smile,“Now that you are able to get in, you hve to make sure this doesnt happen again.”

An Unforgettable Evening
One winter evening at the Beijing Railway Station I learned how to avoid being deceived. It was cold, windy evening when my girl friend and I arrived by train from my hometown. We didnt know whether buses would still be running at that late hour, so we waited outside the station for a long time. Hunger, chill and fatigue caught up with us. Just then a gentle and cultivated young man came up to us. He said he would like to do us a favour.“Go to my home nearby and take a rest. Its comfortable.”How could we believe a strangers words? So we answered,“No, thank you!”However, he insisted,“Im a kind man, just come with me.”I couldnt picture what would happen if we followed him. I was shivering, but firmly I retorted,“No, thank you, kind man. I know wicked persons occur only in small munbers. Go away now, please.”And so he did. What would happen next time? Should I be always cautious of being deceived by strngers when Im alone?
