On December 16, 2020, the project “Development of FCC technology for production of gasoline with ultra-low olefins content (abbreviated hereinafter as ULO technology)”developed by the SINOPEC Research Institute of Petroleum Processing (RIPP) as the leader in collaboration with the SINOPEC Shijiazhuang Petrochemical Branch Company and the SINOPEC Catalyst Company had passed the technical appraisal organized by the SINOPEC Science and Technology Division. The experts of the Appraisal Committee have unanimously admitted that the ULO technology with independent intellectual property rights features a strong innovative nature to reach an internationally advanced level as a whole.

The increasingly stringent environmental regulations have specified the olefins volume fraction in automotive gasoline to be less than 15%. RIPP, propped up by the FCC technology with multidimentional fluidized bed reactor coupled with fundamental research on reaction chemistry at the molecular level, has proposed an idea for regulating olefins yield by means of selective hydrogen transfer reaction, and through integration and innovations in the area of novel zeolites and catalyst matrix studies has successfully developed a new FCC technology capable of producing gasoline with ultra-low olefins content. This new FCC technology has been applied in a couple of FCC units, which can directly crank out FCC gasoline containing less than 10 vol% of olefins while retaining the octane rating of gasoline and maintaining the smooth operation of FCC unit to attain apparent economic and social benefits.
