You might be crazy about Shakespeare's “Romeo and Juliet” as an English learner, but what do you think British teenagers studying Chinese are crazy about? Well, it's Cao Xueqin's classic, “The Dream of the Red Chamber”.

On December 18, nine British students arrived in Beijing for a seven-day trip after winning a Chinese Speaking Competition in Britain.

More than 170 students from 36 secondary schools took part in that competition last month. It was organized by the British Council. Three of the students coming to Beijing won first prizes for Language Ability. The other six were first prize winners for a dramatic performance in Chinese entitled (剧名为) “A New Home for Lin Daiyu”.

“We chose to perform this drama because we all love the characters in the tragic story. They're traditional and loveable,” said Imogen Williams, 13, who played the lead role, Lin Daiyu. Williams said her group spent all their lunch breaks for nearly two months together, watching the drama, studying the characters, and practicing.

“We were excited to win the grand prize — the trip to Beijing. My mum even cried when she heard the news!” recalled Alice Clark-Edwards, who was “Wang Xifeng” in the drama.

These students have fallen in love with Chinese literature and are crazy about Chinese music and movies. “I love Jay Chou, Wilber Pan and the boy band Flowers. As for actresses, Zhang Ziyi is my favorite,” said Nishat Ali, 16.

Mark Strand, a former US poet who won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1999, has died in New York aged 80. Strand, whose works were translated into more than 30 languages, died at his daughter's home on Saturday from liposarcoma, a rare form of cancer.

Absence and loss were recurring (再現) themes for the writer, who was known for his exact language and unreal imagery. One of his poems, Keeping Things Whole, begins with the stanza (押韵): “In a field. I am the absence of field.”

“This is always the case,” the poem continues. “Wherever I am I am what is missing.”

Born on Prince Edward Island in Canada, Strand grew up in various cities across the US and South America.

“Masterly” poetry—Sleeping With One Eye Open, his first collection, was published in 1964. Its title poem, he later made known, drew on the anxiety he felt at the height of America's cold war with the Soviet Union.

His early work saw him characterized, unjustly in his eyes, as an unhappy poet buried in uncertainty and death. “I find them evenly lit,” he once said in reference to his poems' apparent darkness.

Strand's Pulitzer was awarded for his 1998 collection Blizzard of One, described as “masterly” by the New York Times. “Strand's poems produce resonance (回声) with a lighting sense of the infinite,” the newspaper's critic wrote. “Strand doesn't approach the universal through the particular. He approaches the universal through the universal”.

In addition to writing and translating poetry, Strand wrote children's books and art criticism and helped edit several poetry collections.

His daughter Jessica remembered him as “a funny, elegant, generous and brilliant man who lived to work and to be with his friends and the people he loved.”

5. What is Mark Strand famous for?

A. His appearance of absence and loss.     B. 30 languages' translation of his poetry.

C. His uncertainty about the realistic life.     D. His exact language and unreal imagery.

6. What can we learn about Mark from his early work?

A. Mark Strand is upset.                 B. Mark Strand is optimistic.

C. Mark Strand is active.                 D. Mark Strand is realistic.

7. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Strand's first collection came out in 1998.

B. Keeping Things Whole was awarded in 1999.

C. The New York Times criticized his Blizzard of One.

D. Mark Strand was born on a small island in America.

8. What is the best title for the passage?

A. An American Father               B. An American Artist

C. A Great American Poet             D. A Great American Dreamer

Heritage is our legacy (遺产) from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable (无可取代的) sources of life and inspiration. Places as unique and diverse as the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Great Wall of China make up our world's heritage.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.

How does a place become a World Heritage Site? It takes a lot of people to decide.

1) If a country wants one of its places to be on the World Heritage List, it has to ask UNESCO. The place must be important and special. UNESCO put the Great Wall on the list in 1987 because, it said, it was a great part of Chinese culture and beautifully made to go with the land. When a country asks, it must also make a plan for taking care of the place.

2) The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO talks about different places and decides whether to put them on the list. The committee meets every June. Many experts help the committee to decide.

3) After a new place goes on the list, UNESCO gives money to help keep it looking good. If a place is in serious danger, it may be put on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger. UNESCO gives special care and help to those places.

4) Countries have to give UNESCO regular reports about places on the list. If UNESCO thinks a country isn't taking good enough care of a place, the site will be taken off the list.

9. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 1?

A. To tell us what is heritage.

B. To stress the importance of heritages.

C. To explain the aims of protecting heritages.

D. To introduce some places of interest in the world.

10. About cultural and natural heritage around the world, UNESCO encourages all the following EXCEPT ____.

A. identification     B. conservation     C. protection     D. application

11. If a place successfully becomes a World Heritage Site, the country ____.

A. won't take trouble of caring for it

B. can ask UNESCO for more money and help

C. should continue to take special care of it

D. will try to put it on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger

12. The purpose of putting a place on the World Heritage List is to ____.

A. have it taken better care of

B. attract more tourists from other countries

C. make it known to other countries

D. get more money and help from other countries

A Scotsman and an Englishman lived next door to each other. The Scotsman owned a hen and each morning he would look in his garden and pick up his hen's egg for breakfast. One morning he looked into his garden and saw that the hen had laid an egg in the Englishman's garden.

He was about to go next door when he saw the Englishman pick up the egg. The Scotsman ran up to the Englishman and told him that the egg belonged to him because he owned the hen. The Englishman disagreed because the egg was on his property (財产).

They argued for a while until finally the Scotsman said, “In my family we normally settle disputes by the following actions: We kick each other and we compare the time how long it takes us to get back up. Whoever gets up quicker wins the egg.”

The Englishman agreed to this, so the Scotsman found his heaviest pair of boots and put them on. He took a few steps back, then ran toward the Englishman and kicked as hard as he could in his stomach.

The Englishman fell to the floor, holding his stomach and howling in pain for 10 minutes. Eventually the Englishman stood up and said, “Now it's my turn to kick you.” At this time, the Scotsman said, “Maybe you should just keep the egg.”

13. What did the Scotsman pick up in his garden?
