This special topic of theJournal of Sport and Health Science(JSHS) focused onExercise and oxidative stresswas edited by Drs. Zsolt Radak and Scott K. Powers. It includes 1 guest editorial and 4 review articles contributed by research scientists from Hungary, USA, and Spain, etc. Below, we present the biographies of the guest editors and the main authors.

Dr. Zsolt Radak received his Ph.D. from the University Tsukuba in Japan. He has received Hungary’s Bolyai Research Fellowship in Medicine and then Szechenyi Professorship from the Hungarian Academy of Science. He is the DSc of Hungarian Academy of Science at the field of medicine. He is a professor and served as dean, an associate-dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Science of Semmelweis University, Budapest, Hungary. From September of 2014 he has been a professor and head of the Research Institute of Sport Science, University of Physical Education. He has been a visiting professor at Toho University, Juntendo University, and Waseda University in Japan; Texas University, USA; and Beijing Sport University, China. He edited the book ofFree Radicals in Exercise and Aging, published by Human Kinetics;Exercise and Diseases, published by Meyer & Meyer. His new bookPhysiology of Physical Trainingwas published 2018 by Academic Press. He published more than 200 papers in academic journals, which were cited more than 11,000 times. The h-index of his publication is 62.

Dr. Scott Powers is the UAA Endowed Professor and a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Applied Physiology and Kinesiology at the University of Florida. His research has focused upon several health-related topics associated with oxidative stress along with studies investigating the mechanisms responsible for exercise preconditioning of both cardiac and skeletal muscle fibers. Research in the Powers laboratory has been continuously supported by research grants from several funding agencies including the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and the American Lung Association. This work has resulted in >260 peer-reviewed publications and many of these reports are highly cited in the literature. In recognition of his research achievements, Dr. Powers has received the “Honor Award” from both the Environmental & Exercise Physiology (EEP) section of the American Physiological Society and the American College of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Mari Carmen Gomez-Cabrera is a Professor at Freshage Research Group (https://www.uv.es/freshage/), Centro de Investigación Biomédica en Red de Fragilidad y Envejecimiento Saludable (CIBERFES), Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physiology, the University of Valencia; Fundación Investigación Hospital Clínico Universitario/INCLIVA, Spain. She has published more than 100 scientific papers (h-index: 35) and 10 book chapters. She has participated in 30 national and 4 European research projects. Her scientific interests are focused on the study of cell signaling in skeletal muscle by physical exercise (J Physiol2005,FASEB J2004); the oxidative stress associated with physical exercise and the effect of antioxidant administration (JAMA2003,AJCN2008,AJP2010); the mechanisms involved in skeletal muscle atrophy (PloS One2012,Age2012); as well as in the study of benefits of physical exercise to ensure healthy aging (Nat Commun2016,JAMDA2016,J Physiol2016,FRBM2016).

Dr. Li Li Ji is a Professor and Director of the Laboratory of Physiological Hygiene and Exercise at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. He served as the Director of School of Kinesiology during 2011–2017. He was on faculty at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign during 1987–1993 and University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994–2011, during which he served as the Department Chair for 10 years. Dr. Ji’s research expertise is cellular and molecular exercise physiology, free radicals and antioxidants in muscle function, adaptation to exercise, pathogenesis, cell signaling, and aging. Dr. Ji has published over 200 articles and book chapters, and given over 170 invited international and domestic lectures. His scholarly work has been cited for >19,000 times and has an h-index of 68. Dr. Ji has served on multiple editorial boards and study sections. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Kinesiology and the American College of Sports Medicine.
