Have you ever wondered4 who invented kindergarten? His name was Friedrich Froebel. As an educator5, Froebel wanted to help kids to learn through play. This led him to start the worlds first kindergarten program6 in Germany in 1837.
In German, kindergarten means “garden of children” or “childrens garden”. In Froebels program, children used music, stories, and playtime to learn. They also spent time studying nature. This was unique7. However, most people in the 19th century saw playing as a waste8 of time.
Still, Froebels kindergartens caught on. It wasnt long before they spread to other parts of the world. In 1856, Margaret Schurz set up the first kindergarten in the United States. It was in Wisconsin. Kindergarten grew fast in the U.S. after Elizabeth Peabody brought it to Boston.
At first, kindergartens in the U.S. were private9. That changed10 in 1873. That year, Susan Blow started the first public11 kindergarten in St. Louis, Missouri. Blow became interested in kindergarten while traveling in Germany in 1870. When she went back to the U.S., she went on learning about Froebels ideas.
In St. Louis, Blow also set up a training program for teachers. She went on to write several books about Froebel and education.
Today, many children all over the world go to kindergarten. In the U.S., its the first year of formal12 schooling for 98% of children. Why is kindergarten so important? Many people think it makes the move into elementary school easier. In kindergarten, kids learn important lessons about self-esteem13. They practice getting along with others. Kindergarten also gives children a chance14 to learn about the world.
