Text 1

W: Oh, no!I meant to call my mum, but it's too late to call today.

M: Yeah. Your mum lives in London, not here in New York. They're five hours ahead of us. So, it's already midnight there.

Text 2

M: I went to see a Lady Gaga concert this weekend. She was amazing!

W: How did you get the ticket?

M: They sold tickets at the door for half price just before the concert began.

Text 3

M: I've been waiting for three weeks for someone to return Harry Potter to the library. I'm getting so impatient!

W: Why don't you just buy your own copy online?

Text 4

M: It's freezing out there! Please give me the hottest drink you serve.

W: You're coming to the right place. One hot chocolate, coming right up.

Text 5

W: I'm so stressed. I don't know how to tell my boyfriend that we should break up.

M: Well, I think honesty is the best policy.

M: Hey, Susie. Can I borrow your car tonight?

W: No!The last time you borrowed it, you returned it with the gas tank empty.

M: Did I?I'm sorry, baby. I promise to fill the tank this time.

W: What do you need it for?

M: I want to take my mum out to dinner.

W: And I'm not invited?

M: You can come if you want. I thought you'd probably have plans with your friends.

W: I do. But I'd rather go with you. Don't you think it's time for me to meet your mother?

M: OK, sure. Just don't expect her to love you right away. She never thinks any girl is good enough for me.

M: What's up! Are you still studying?

W: Yeah, I'll be at it all night.

M: When's the big test?

W: Not for three days. But I have too many things to remember before then.

M: You're taking this Spanish class so seriously. Don't you think you should lighten up a bit?

W: I can't. Not only do I need to get good grades, but I also have to actually learn this stuff. Next year, I'm applying to a nursing program, and they give special financial help to students who speak two languages.

M: Come on. You'll do fine. You always do fine.

W: Only when I study hard.

M: OK. But can't you take a little break?Hey, you should come to get some fish with me. You know, fish is actually very good for your brain.

M: How can I help you, ma'am?

W: I was hoping you could look at my car today. For the past few weeks, it has been making very strange noises.

M: What kinds of noises?

W: It sounds as if something is being damaged in the wheels. It only happens when I'm slowing down.

M: Whoa ... It sounds like you need new brakes. You'll have to leave the car with us until tomorrow.

W: Gosh!I was thinking you'd be able to get it back to me this afternoon.

M: Unfortunately, we need to order the parts, and we can't get started until they arrive. If I order them now, they'll be here this afternoon, or tomorrow morning at the latest.

W: I see. Well, why don't I just bring my car back in the morning? There's a show I really want to see downtown tonight.

M: I don't think that's a good idea. You're risking your life by driving this car. If I were you, I'd check the bus schedule.

M: Excuse me, could you help me?

W: Yes. What seems to be the problem?

M: Well, I was wondering if anyone has turned in a passport.

W: I'm afraid not. Have you lost your passport?

M: I think so. I can't find it anywhere in my hotel room, and I remember the last place I used it yesterday was in this department store.

W: Where exactly did you use your passport in our store?

M: I wanted to buy a pair of sunglasses first, but I couldn't find a suitable one. Then, in the sports department I had to show it to pay for a pair of trainers with my traveler's checks.

W: Well, would you please fill in this lost property report? I'll keep my eye out for it. Those kinds of things usually turn up eventually, but I suggest you contact your embassy and tell them about your situation, so they can issue you a new passport in case it doesn't show up.

M: OK. Do you have a pen?

W: Here you are.

M: Thank you. Oh, I always take good care of my things. I don't know what happened to me yesterday.

New Orleans, Louisiana is known throughout the world for its food, music, and festivals. Every year, many visitors come to this lively city, and almost all of them spend time in the French Quarter, New Orleans' oldest neighourhood. Despite its name, you won't find many French buildings in the French Quarter. Two large fires in the 18th century destroyed most of the buildings that were built under French rule.

New Orleans' best-known street is Bourbon Street. It is appreciated for its lively bars and restaurants, but it's most famous for its annual Mardi Gras celebration.

A hurricane destroyed much of the New Orleans. However, the French Quarter was not affected by the hurricane because it was built on higher and drier land.

1—5 BBAAB 6—10 CACBC 11—15 CAACB  16—20 CABAB

2. B。In Britain “reasonable punishmentment”in the home is allowed unless it leaves a mark.

3. A。文章第三段I think of spanking (打屁股) as a dangerous-tool, but then there are times when there is a job big enough for a dangerous tool。

4. A。 Professor Gunnoe questioned 2,600 people about being smacked

In the North Pole, most of the water is frozen all the time and human habitation is not found可知答案。

13. C。 In these regions, the only way a person can lead a livelihood is to adopt hunting and fishing as the primary source of food可知答案。

5. B。从Can't we use just a little of your special stuff?

6. C。由use just a little of your special stuff可知Indi是在恳求作者。

16. D。“We're sorry for breaking a promise.”

II. 1. as。考查 as ...as 结构。

2. in。

3. sadness。

4. becomes。

5.  bored。

6.  fingers。

7. be read。

8. fixing。

9. properly。

10. it。

III. 1. It was the third time that he had been ill that year.

2. So far as English is concerned, it is not so difficult as you might think.

3. The doctor recommended him to give up smoking.

4. She refuses to acknowledge the need for reform.

5. He's fully occupied looking after three small children.

I. 1. anything改为something 2. are改为were 3. Unfortunate改为Unfortunately 4. because后加of 5. realized改为realize 6. waters改为water 7. measure改为measures 8. prevent改为preventing 9. or改为and 10.

II. One possible version:

Dear Editor,

In the winter holiday I visited the Confucian Temple. I became very concerned about the cultural relics there after I saw how badly some of them were damaged. Some people threw litter and empty bottles everywhere, and others drew pictures or wrote their names on walls.

Thousands of tourists visit the Confucian Temple every day. If visitors don't pay attention to their behavior, the cultural relics will be destroyed and some parts of our history will be lost. So the important thing is that everyone should realize their responsibility to protect the cultural relics. Second, the government should put some warnings in front of the most important places. At the same time, whoever destroys the relics will be punished.

Let's keep the Confucian Temple beautiful and welcome guests from all over the world.

Yours,

Li Hua

M: Whose book is this?

W: It's mine. Why do you ask?

M: Could I borrow it? I've been longing to read it.

W: Certainly, but I warn you. It's not as good as they say.

M: What's the matter with it?

W: Well, for one thing, the story is poorly constructed. And the characters in the story are more like paper dolls than living people.

M: That's strange. Usually that writer does a good job. I've read four of his books and thought they were all well done.

W: I've enjoyed reading his books, but he failed this time.

M: What did the review say?

W: They were mixed—some good, some bad. My review, bad!

W: Hello, Ben. You're getting ready for tomorrow's lessons, aren't you?

M: Yes, but I'm a bit nervous. I have no idea what'll happen in class and how I'll get along with my classmates.

W: I understand how you're feeling. Just take it easy. You'll make a lot of friends very soon.

M: Thank you. I'll try my best to get used to my new school life as soon as possible. By the way, what time does the first class begin?

W: At 8 o'clock. But before that we have 10 minutes to hand in homework and then 20 minutes for morning reading.

M: So we must get to school before 7:30, right?

W: Right.

M: How long does each class last?

W: 45 minutes, I think, with a 10 or 15 minutes' break.

M: Well, I hear that lunchtime is nearly 12 o'clock and I'll be starving by then.

W: Don't worry. During the break after the second class, we can buy something to eat.

M: That's good.

M: You look a bit worried, Susan, what's wrong?

W: I just seem to be putting on some weight these days.

M: Oh dear! That's quite a problem. Can I offer you some advice?

W: Of course, what do you think I should do?

M: I suggest you go on a diet or at least stop eating too much of the things your mother prepared for you, and...

W: And take exercise, right? A lot of people have told me the same thing, but somehow I just can't get up early in the morning.

M: Well, Mother and I will help you. By the way, have you ever thought of arranging your weekend timetable, so you can go to the keep-fit club on the weekend?

W: Yes, that sounds a good idea. Thanks a lot.

W: Hey, Paul. You're still having Thanksgiving dinner at my house on Thursday, right?

M: Yeah. Thanks again for the invitation. I was worried I'd have to spend it alone after my parents announced they'd be in Finland.

W: Why don't you go with them?

M: I have a lot of work to do next week.

W: Well, I'm glad you won't be alone on a holiday. It'll be great to have you celebrate with us. The more the merrier!

M: Exactly. How many people will be there?

W: Let's see...my parents, my grandpa, my sister, my brother-in-law, my niece, and my two cousins...plus us. So, ten people altogether.

M: Should I bring anything?

W: Nope. We've got it covered.

M: Come on. I hate to show up empty-handed. I'll make a great pumpkin pie.

W: Sounds delicious, but my sister has already volunteered for dessert.

M: I'll bring a nice bottle of wine.

W: Sounds good to me.

It was 2:05 in the afternoon. When I entered the classroom, I was surprised to see a video camera. Our class teacher was operating the camera, and my classmates were all talking among themselves slowly. Most of us had never been in front of a video camera before, so we were quite nervous. As for me. I had once faced one at home, my uncle was shooting when we were celebrating my sister's birthday. But this was completely different. We had to talk about our articles as if we were reading news on TV. The funny thing was that every time I tried to face the camera and talk about my article, I forgot the article and couldn't resist looking down at it. It was a completely different experience for me, thanks to our class teacher.

M: They're on the third floor, next to the handbags.

W: Thank you.

Text 2

W: Mike, you don't quite seem yourself today. You okay?

M: Well, I hardly slept last night. I've been studying for my exams these days.

Text 3

W: You mean Jack has stopped smoking, Frank? That's amazing.

M: Yes, it's really amazing. He used to be a chain smoker, you know.

W: What about you? Have you thought about quitting smoking?

Text 4

W: Summer vacation is coming. Have you already got any plan?

M: Not really. But I'm going to head down to Vancouver Island to visit my brother for a few days first. We haven't seen each other for a couple of years. Then maybe go back home. I'm a little homesick.

Text 5

W: I feel scared of hosting the evening party. You know, this is the first time for me to host such an important party.

M: Don't you worry. Just be yourself and everything will be fine. I'm sure you can do quite well.

W: Hello, can I help you?

M: Yes, I posted a parcel two weeks ago and it hasn't arrived yet.

W: OK, when was it posted?

M: On Monday, the twelfth of June in Sheffield.

W: Aha, what's the name and address of the sender?

M: Who? Oh, me? I am Paul Castle. That's C-A-S-T-L-E. I live at 77 Sydney Road, Sheffield 58.

W: And who was it addressed to?

M: My mother, Mrs. Jay Castle. She lives at 128, Devon Street.

W: Good. Now what exactly was in the parcel?

M: Well, it was her birthday last week. And I, um, made her a cake, um, a chocolate one.

W: I see, OK, I will see if we've got it here.

W: Well, honey, which one do you prefer? No. 4 Candy Street or No. 6 Station Road?

M: Well, it is difficult. They are both very nice and they both got the 4 bedrooms we need. Station Road is close to town, so it would be very convenient for work and shopping. But Candy Street is much quieter, because it is much further around.

W: Well, we could get to town easily, though.

M: That's true. One thing that worries me about Station Road is that it hasn't got a garage. And then there are the gardens. The one at Station Road is tiny. But the one at Candy Street is huge. Could we keep at looking good?

A Final Year and A Global Dream

What does a final high school year really feel like in China and what is the future I look forward to? A rough picture is painted as follows.

Currently, studying tops my to-do list and I,with the goal of being among the top 50 in the

whole grade, have made a schedule specially tailored to make full use of my time to review all the required exam subjects, even signing up for one tutor class to sharpen my weak maths skills. My dream one year later, ideally, is to get an admission letter from Qinghua University to study electronic engineering. Everything going well, I'll go overseas to further my studies, aiming at helping my motherland's Made in China 2.0 Drive.

Best wishes to all the dreams from fellows around the globe.
