Sucking Up the Storm

New pumps （水泵） that are being built along the Mexican Gulf of the United States could prevent storm surging from flooding coastal cities.

The terrible destruction that some severe hurricanes like Hurricane Katrina gave New Orleans isn't news anymore. Engineers are building something they say will keep it that way. It's a big pump.

People who live in New Orleans found out the hard way that the city can be a bad place to stay when a big hurricane strikes this area. Most of the Big Easy is below sea level and it filled up with floodwaters from the storm surge （洶涌澎湃） when the levees （防洪大堤） broke.

Engineers are installing a big new pump they say should keep the city dry in case another big hurricane blows in. In engineer-talk， they call it the West Closure Complex， or WCC， and they say it's the biggest pump station that has ever been built in history.

The West Closure Complex will protect the city from storm surge in the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway with two layers of defense.  Protection starts with steel floodgates strong and tall enough to block a 16-foot storm surge. Then they'll fire up the pumps. These are big pumps， big enough to empty an Olympic-sized swimming pool in less than 5 seconds.

They're built solid， so they won't collapse （坍塌） under pressure， the way the city's levees did last time. The WCC is built to stand up to 140 mile-per-hour wind.

I've gotten used to travelling alone over the past few years， and have found it's something I quite enjoy most of the time. One thing I still find difficult though is eating alone in foreign restaurants， especially during main dining hours， such as a Saturday night. And yet， that's the position I found myself in last night， wanting to enjoy a final Parisian meal of oysters（牡蠣）. I headed to a spot close to my house. But， to my dismay， when I arrived around 8：15 it looked as if the restaurant were already full. And worse， everyone was eating with someone else， and all of a sudden I got a kind of lonely and sad feeling. But I wanted my oysters， so I asked a waiter， “Would it be possible to find a seat for me？”

He said， “It is quite full， but for you I will find a place！” I waited and he quickly returned and asked me to follow him. He pulled out a table next to another couple. This couple was using one of the chairs of my table to store their things， and as the waiter pulled out my chair， the gentleman began to remove his belongings. I told him it wasn't necessary.

“You are alone？” He asked me.

“Yes，” I said. And then the waiter came up.

“No！ You are not alone！ Now you are here， dining with us！” he said， smiling， and with a gesture of his hand indicating the restaurant.

It was perhaps one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. I settled into my seat and watched the families and couples enjoying their dinner while I slurped the last briny oysters of my visit. And the feeling of being alone was forgotten.

It is very typical to find dragon in Chinese Jade. Dragon is a most mythical and most powerful creature in Chinese Myth.

Dragon is a creature developing from many animals including pig， cow， horse， bird， rat， snake， etc. In summary， the Chinese think of dragon as an animal can do everything， can fly into the sky， can drill into the ground， can swim in the sea， can move the mountain， can produce fire， can throw out water， can help the poor and punish the rich， etc. In general， the dragon only does good. Many Chinese use “Wish Son to Be a Dragon” to express their good will to their children's success.

Dragon had various forms in different times， for example， nowadays， the Chinese think the dragon has a head of horse， horns of deer， claws of eagle， body of snake， tails of Qilin （a mythical creature with Chinese origin）， teeth of tiger， and tone of crocodile. Above all， the dragon possessed all the special power from all the animals. It differs from most western view of dragon， the dragon represents the scientific imagination of various times， and it shall be a high-tech robot for the future.

The influence of love of dragon spread to every aspect. Before going outside in the morning， many of us check a window thermometer（温度计） for the temperature. Last week， a group of international students paid visit to our school to learn about our tea-drinking culture.
