话说“中国特色社会主义”之英译

英文词典如此定义“中国特色社会主义”：

Socialism with Chinese characteristics， meaning socialism adapted to Chinese conditions， is the official ideology of the Communist Party of China， claimed to be based upon scientific socialism. This ideology supports the creation of a socialist market economy dominated by the public sector since China is in the primary stage of socialism.

阅读英文电子版《习近平谈治国理政》时，笔者经过统计发现，全书有99处使用socialism with Chinese characteristics，47处使用Chinese socialism，2处使用Chinas socialism。在政治文献中，第一个为官方推荐使用的标准英文表述，而后两个只是根据使用场合、语用目的所采取的变通表述。

1.原文：坚持和发展中国特色社会主义

译文：uphold and develop socialism with Chinese characteristics

2.原文：中国特色社会主义道路，是实现我国社会主义现代化的必由之路。

译文：The path of Chinese socialism is the only way to achieve Chinas socialist modernization.

3.原文：夺取中国特色社会主义的新胜利

译文：achieve new victories for Chinas socialism

从语言形式考察，政治文献中能够开始使用后两种表述，本身就说明，英文译者对于语言的理解更加深入和透彻了。socialism单独使用，自然指“社会主义”，一旦加上形容词Chinese或所有格Chinas，其義也自然缩小，意谓“中国的社会主义”。在“社会主义”的康庄大道上，“中国”已至，“特色”宁尚遥迢兮？

“社会主义”在我国的实践，“中国特色社会主义”的提出，一再反驳了丘吉尔关于社会主义的谬论：Socialism is a philosophy of failure， the creed of ignorance， and the gospel of envy， its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.

作为社会主义国家的一分子，我们还是深信马克思的至理名言：Demo-cracy is the road to socialism. 中国特色社会主义自然也不例外。                     □
