Remember when your mom told you not to eat too many candy bars and sweets because they can cause tooth decay(蛀牙)?However, it turns out that chocolate can be more beneficial to your teeth than you might expect. Recent studies show that chocolate can effectively fight against tooth decay, as if we need another excuse to eat chocolate.

Chocolate offers protection like fluoride, a main ingredient in most household toothpastes. Not only does chocolate protect our teeth, but it can do so very effectively. Studies show that chocolate has compounds that provide strong protection for teeth. One of the compounds in chocolate, CBH, is shown to protect even more effectively than fluoride.

Tooth decay happens when bacteria work to turn sugar into acids(酸)in our mouths. This is why eating foods with high sugar content can lead to more tooth decay. The compounds in chocolate, however, are anti-bacterial and can fight against bacteria in your mouth. The CBH compound in particular also works to strengthen tooth enamel(牙釉), and protects against tooth decay.

Does this mean that you can eat as much chocolate as you want without worrying about your teeth? It depends on the types of chocolate that you like. The protective effect of chocolate is most effective when you chew on cocoa beans. Of course, this option is not very appealing to most people. A more tasty option is to choose dark chocolate with little sugar content, ideally no more than 6 to 8 grams per serving. For other types of chocolate with higher sugar content, the effect will be lessened. However, because of the protective compounds, it is still better for your teeth than other sweets and desserts containing the same amount of sugar.

28. Which of the following can best explain“ingredient” underlined in paragraph 2?

A. Material.B. Product.C. Flavor.D. Feature.

29. What can we infer about the compounds in chocolates?

A. They can make chocolates cure tooth decay.

B. They can effectively stop teeth from decaying.

C. They may protect teeth better than toothpastes do.

D. They may soon replace most household toothpastes.

30. How does chocolate fight tooth decay?

A. Break down acids.

B. Build up compounds.

C. Fix up tooth enamels.

D. Fight against bacteria.

31. What is the main idea of the text?

A. Chocolate plays the role of toothpaste.

B. Chocolate protects against tooth decay.

C. Chocolate is the best choice for teeth protection.

D. Chocolate is healthier to teeth than other sweets.

A roadside system that detects if a mobile phone is in use in a passing vehicle is being tested in UK first. Despite being unable to tell whether the driver is using the phone, it is hoped that it will act as a warning to people who makes calls behind the wheel. The technology picks up the phone signal in the vehicle and activates a roadside warning sign of a mobile phone with a red line through it.

The system cannot tell the difference between a driver and the passengers on a bus, but to some degree it can warn drivers that they can be detected using their phone. Using a directional antenna(天線), the detector picks up radio waves produced by a phone handset, and measures the signal strength and length of them. When a signal is detected of a duration(持续时间)long enough and signal strength strong enough to set off the system, the detector activates the warning sign. The detector is able to distinguish Bluetooth connections or hands-free devices which, when picked up, will prevent the activation.

While this new system is no replacement for a police officer catching someone in the act, it could be enough to make some drivers think twice—and that has to be a positive step forward. However, just as technology has enabled the problem of drivers using mobile phones illegally, it can also be a big part of the solution in getting people to stop. Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said. The council said that enabling the system to record specific number plates could be a“future development”.

Using a mobile phone at the wheel is one of the four road crimes which can have horrible consequences if it causes a deadly or serious car crash. Law enforcement(执行)technology has been falling behind for a decade and not made any easier by motor producers that encourage users to plug in their phones even before driving.

32. Why is the roadside system used according to paragraph 1?

A. To send out cellphone signals to the drivers.

B. To detect the drivers illegal use of cellphone.

C. To monitor peoples use of phones while driving.

D. To warn people against using phones while driving.

33. How does the detector of the roadside system work?

A. It measures the length of the phone.

B. It warns drivers with a phone in hand.

C. It picks up radio waves from handsets.

D. It activates the vehicles Bluetooth system.

34. What does the text suggest drivers do about the road warning sign?

A. Swift to Bluetooth while driving.

B. Have a close watch of road signs.

C. Avoid being picked up by detectors.

D. Stop using a hands-free mobile phone.

35. What will the county council probably do in the future?

A. Share the devices with the police.

B. Make the system more advanced.

C. Replace the police with the new system.

D. Take steps to settle road safety problems.

When I reached inside the floorboard, my hand touched what felt like a book. I pulled it out. It was old and small: Bartletts Familiar Quotations(引語). I wondered whom the quotations were supposed to be familiar to. What I did know, thanks to Ms. Rattray, my seventh-grade teacher, was the correct way to use quotation marks. I decided to see what was inside this little book.

On the top corners of each page was a word or phrase. I opened it to“comfort and despair”and then“Doubt”and “Light”. Id never thought about“light”any other way except as a lamp or daylight. It turned out that Mr. Bartlett didnt feel all these emotions himself. He had gathered up quotations from thousands of other people.

I was relieved to discover that those people were not afraid to express what they thought, including the fears, and that they had so many thoughts about things that troubled me. I was lonely and I didnt know whom to talk to about the world and my role in it.

In ninth grade, I worked as an assistant at our local library. I often hid in the corner, where no one would see me, and I would read. It was at this library that I realized how some of those emotions Id felt while reading Bartletts came to life in the characters I had started discovering in novels.

I have bought a few of the newer editions, but the original one is the one that helped me explore my inner self and see more than young mind and heart were able to understand.

A. He found time to read Bartletts books again.

B. He volunteered to work as a school librarian.

27. What is the purpose of writing this text?

A. To recall a childhood event.

B. To share a soul-feeding book.

C. To show respect for a noted writer.

D. To stress the importance of emotions.

C

According to a new study from Oxford Economics, a rise in artificial intelligence will result in an increase in“income inequality”as they estimate 20 million manufacturing(制造業) jobs will be lost in the next 11 years. In China alone, there could be 14 million robots taking work currently done by humans by 2030. While in the United States, more than 1.5 million workers would have lost their employment to technology by 2030.

The report predicts the use of robots worldwide has increased to 2.25 million over the past two decades. The researchers said: “As a result of robotisation, tens of millions of jobs will be lost, especially in poorer local economies that rely on lower-skilled workers, which will therefore translate to an increase in income inequality.”

However, researchers noted how“robotisation”has the potential to boost productivity and economic growth. They predict a 5.3 percent rise in global gross domestic product(GDP)in 2030.The report said:“This means adding an extra $4.9 trillion per year to the global economy by 2030(in todays prices).”

The report remained positive about the use of automation(自动化)and urged lawmakers not to stand in the way of robots in the workplace, despite the threat of job losses.

The researchers said:“These findings should not lead policy-makers to seek to prevent the adoption of robot technology. Instead, the challenge should be to distribute the robotics profits more evenly by helping workers prepare for and adapt to the big changes it will bring about. Explore all policy options, from training initiatives(方案)and new welfare programs such as universal basic income.”

28. What is the number of potential job loss in the Oxford Economics report based on?

A. Accurate figures. B. Official statistics.

C. Artificial intelligence.D. Approximate calculation.

A. It has been universally recognized.

B. It has helped increase the global income.

D. It may increase international competition in lawmaking.

31. What do the researchers suggest policy-makers do in the last paragraph?

A. Boost national economic development.

B. Provide citizens with lifelong education.

C. Slow down the spread of robot technology.

D. Protect workersinterests by making new plans.

D

Is there any invention as ancient and as fundamental as soap? It can be traced(追溯)to Babylonian civilization around 2,800 B.C.(handy for rubbing after all that gardening). By 1550 B. C., the Egyptians were marketing it as a medicinal aid for skin diseases. There was a soap factory buried in Pompeii(龐贝古城), and the product is believed to have been used for washing clothes.

But try telling that to the young assistants in a supermarket. It had never occurred to me that we could have an entirely soap-free civilization until the other week when I walked up and down the likely shelves looking for soap. There was no sign of it and I finally stopped a young man in uniform and asked.

“Soup?”he said.“Thats with the other tinned foods along the back row.”

“No, soap — the stuff you wash with.”

“Ah,”he replied, and took me to the washing powder shelf.

When I finally did arrive at the soap, I realized why I hadnt spotted it the first time. There was a tiny half shelf with a few bars of soap. The assistants had been confused not because I struggle to pronounce“soap”but because they have been brought up in a world without it. Never mind its 5,000-year-old history, the bar of soap is dying out. It is being pushed to the corners as most of humanity washes itself by squeezing soapy liquids out of a bottle.

I actually never looked upon soap with fondness until I, in my teens, came across an astonishing display of soap in a private museum. Some of them looked as if they might have been freshly-picked flowers or sweet-smelling candies. On show were hundreds of bars of soap, in various shapes and colors.

I will rather miss the traditional bar of soap. Lightly flavored with herbs, a new bar looks almost eatable — which is how it appeared to those caught up in the famines(饥荒).

The bar of soap might yet stage a comeback.

32. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?

A. The wide application of soap.

B. The long-time existence of soap.

C. The regional distribution of soap.

D. The detailed classification of soap.

33. Why does the author mention the experience in the supermarket?

A. To complain about the poor customer service.

B. To suggest reasonable arrangement of shelves.

C. To show soap is giving way to liquid cleaning products.

D. To deny pronunciations of soap and soup are confusing.

34. How did the author feel about the soap exhibition in the private museum?

A. Curious. B. Strange. C. Unbelievable. D. Admiring

35. Which may be the best title of the text?

A. The forgotten joy of soap.

B. The ups and downs of soap.

C. The past and present of soap.

D. The mixed reaction to soap.

About 600 million people suffer food poisoning every year, according to the World Health Organization. When an outbreak occurs, investigators can spend days or weeks tracking its source. Meanwhile, huge amounts of clean and safe food may be got rid of along with the contaminated(受污染的)items.

36      First, an application of blockchain(區块链)technology is beginning to solve the tracking problem. A contaminated item can be removed immediately instead of wasting entire national stocks of the item. Second, enhanced food packaging is providing new ways to determine whether foods have been stored at proper temperatures and whether they might have begun to spoil.

Blockchain is an accounting system in which entries are recorded in multiple identical“books”stored on computers in multiple locations.      37      With this system, it is extremely difficult to tamper with(篡改)the recorded accounts. By combining growers, distributors and sellers on a common blockchain, it also creates a reliable record of a given foods path through the end-to-end supply chain.      38      However, this would have taken days with the standard mix of written and digital records. A blockchain-based cloud platform developed for the food industry—IBM Food Trust—is already employed by major food sellers.

39      They can monitor the quality and safety of food. For instance, some sensor tags slowly change color after a package has been opened and indicate when the final time has come to throw away the food.      40      Others change color if a product has been exposed to above-recommended temperatures.

A. Advanced technologies save many lives.

B. The origin of food can be traced in seconds.

C. This creates highly trusted business records.

D. Many food-business giants have joined the Food Trust.

E. Such sensors can reduce waste by showing that a food is safe to eat.

F. Together a pair of technologies can reduce both food waste and food poisoning.

G. Research companies are developing enhanced food packaging with small sensors.
