以大视野译“大局”

政治文献中，经常出现“大局”一词。英文版《习近平谈治国理政》是如何处理这一关键词的呢？

原文：坚持从中华民族整体利益的高度把握两岸关系大局。

译文：We must firmly handle cross-Straits relations in the overall interests of the Chinese nation.

点评：质言之，“两岸关系大局”即“两岸关系”，译文中的省略虽显意外，但也在情理之中。那么，“保持两岸关系大局稳定”之英文自然也就如出一辙了：keep cross-Straits relations stable。

原文：统筹国内国际两个大局

译文：a holistic approach to both the domestic and international situations

点评：其实“大局”倒是容易想到对应之英文situation，只是在英文中如何照顾搭配关系，才是翻译时的重点。此处将动宾关系的汉语短语处理为名词短语，正是考虑到其上下文关系。再如：做好外交工作，胸中要裝着国内国际两个大局。To do good diplomatic work， we must keep our eye on the situation both at home and abroad.英文中的keep an eye on sth表示continue to give attention to what is the most important，用它表示“胸中要装着”可谓妥帖。不过，一切译文时刻要因地制宜，比如下例。

原文：胸怀大局，把握大势

译文：bear the big picture in mind and keep in line with the trends

点评：偶尔务虚，以虚译虚，亦未尝不可。

原文：树立大局观念和全局意识

译文：develop a holistic view

点评：为示强调，中文经常连续使用同义词语，比如，此处的“大局观念”与“全局意识”，英译时，宜适时省略，此一例也。

原文：坚持从大局出发考虑问题。

译文：We must put the interests of the state first when make deliberations.

点评：此处“大局”显然指国家利益，故有斯译。本书另一文中，习总书记谈及工人阶级“识大体、顾大局的光荣传统”，概系同义，因而英文近似：the glorious tradition of acting in the overall interests of the country。至此，“服务大局”的英文，读者诸君当也了然于胸了？
