A researcher left a camera near the favorite haunt2 of a large cave of emperor penguins. Then, two of the penguins see it. They went to check the camera out. At that time, the camera was working. The penguins started to peer into its lens. They do not know what it is and they had never seen it. They played it as a toy. This resulted in a very cute penguin “selfie”.

At the start of the film, we can only see the feet of a penguin. One of them kicked3 the camera over. That makes the lens face the sky. The penguin peers into the camera again. They bend towards the lens, they lift their heads, and then they straighten4 up. And they shake their heads. It is as if they decided that this strange object is not worth their time and they give up it.

Penguins are “naturally curious” animals. This is at least the second time that the birds have been caught with a camera. It happened before in 2013 when a penguin left its selfie photo with its gaping beak in the lens at a Canadian ship. The penguin also saw it as a boring toy and tried to eat, so it did not give us any other photos.

Apart from penguins, other animals have also been known to the art of the selfie. An eagle in Western Australia once swooped5 up a camera. It recorded a crocodiles6 in the water because the camera turns the lens over. It also filmed itself. We can see it was pecking7 at the lens and it was flying.

Later, there is the case of a black macaque8. It leads a years-long legal battle. It took a foolish photo of itself. It took it with a camera. It was owned by David Slater. He is a British wildlife photographer. Slater published the image of the macaque. He published it in a book. People who loved animals sue him. They said he was infringing9 on the copyright of the so-called “selfie monkey”. Finally, the parties settled out of court.

Slater admitted the macaque had pressed the shutter10 on his camera. This proved to be the key of the lawsuit against him.

But this selfie is different because the camera was already working and no one put the shutter when the penguins decided to pose and play. So, the researcher should be able to avoid any legal battle.
