A
Nothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.
And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgins chicken house in exchange for manure (肥料). The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.
As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew (炖菜). Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dads pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.
Laughing is essential to keep your stress levels under control. Without humor we would find ourselves with a lot of psychological problems, or on a lot of medications to keep us from going crazy. For a while, my neighborhood was taken over by an army of joggers(慢跑者).They were there all the time: early morning, noon, and evening. There were little old ladies in gray sweats, young couples in Adidas shoes, middleaged men with red faces. “Come on!” My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. “Youll feel great.”
Well, I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more. Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army, Im not alone in my opinion.
First of all, jogging is very hard on the body. Your legs and feet take a real pounding(重擊)running down a road for two or three miles. I developed foot, leg, and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about. Jogging doesnt kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring them out, as they did with me.
Secondly, I got no enjoyment out of jogging. Putting one foot in front of the other for fortyfive minutes isnt my idea of fun. Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, “I love being out there with just my thoughts.” Well, my thoughts began to bore me, and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.
And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasnt just the first week;it was practically every day for two months. I never got past the pain level, and pain isnt fun. What a cruel way to do it! So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly, so why jog?
I dont jog any more, and I dont think I ever will. Im walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good. I bicycle to work when the weather is good. Im getting exercise, and Im enjoying it at the same time. I could never say the same for jogging, and Ive found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.
44. The underlined word “them”(Paragraph 3) most probably refers to “ ”.

C. famous joggers D. physical weaknesses

A. He disliked doing exercise outside.
B. He found it neither healthy nor interesting.
C. He was afraid of having a heart attack.
D. He was worried about being left alone.
47. From the writers experience, we can conclude that.
A. not everyone enjoys jogging
B. he is the only person who hates jogging
C. nothing other than jogging can help people keep fit
D. jogging makes people feel greater than any other sport
D
My old digital camera broke down, so I wanted to buy a new one. Being the cautious type, I fancied a reliable brand. So I went on the Net, spent 15 minutes reading product reviews on good websites, wrote down the names of three top recommendations and headed for my nearest big friendly camera store. There in the cupboard was one of the cameras on my list. And it was on special offer. Oh joy. I pointed at it and asked an assistant, “Can I have one of those?” He looked perturbed (不安). “Do you want to try it first?” he said. It didn t quite sound like a question. “Do I need to?” I replied, “Theres nothing wrong with it.” This made him look a bit offended and I started to feel bad. “No, no. But you should try it,” he said encouragingly, “Compare it with the others.”
I looked across at the others: shelves of similar cameras placed along the wall, offering a wide range of slightly different prices and discounts, with each company selling a range of models based around the same basic box. With so many models to choose from, it seemed that I would have to spend hours weighing X against Y, always trying to take Z and possibly H into account at the same time. But when I had finished, I would still have only the same two certainties that I had entered the store with: first, soon after I carried my new camera out of the shop, it would be worth half what I paid for it; and second, my wonderful camera would very quickly be replaced by a new model.
But something in the human soul whispers that you can beat these traps by making the right choice, the clever choice, the wise choice. In the end, I agreed to try the model I had chosen. The assistant seemed a sincere man. So I let him take out my chosen camera from the cupboard, show how it took excellent pictures of my fellow shoppers...and when he started to introduce the special features, I interrupted to ask whether I needed to buy a carrycase and a memory card as well. Why do we think that new options still offer us anything new? Perhaps it is because they offer an opportunity to avoid facing the fact that our real choices in this culture are far more limited than we would like to imagine.
48. The shop assistant insisted that the writer should.
A. trust him and stop asking questions
B. try the camera to see if there was anything wrong with it
C. get more information about different companies
D. compare the camera he had chosen with the others
49. What does the writer mean by “it would be worth half what I paid for it”(Paragraph 2)?
A. He should get a 50% discount.
B. The price of the camera would soon fall.
C. The quality of the camera was not good.
D. The price of the camera was unreasonably high.
50. The writer decided to try the model he had chosen because he.
A. knew very little about it
B. wanted to make sure the one he chose would be the best
C. didnt trust the shop assistant
D. had a special interest in taking pictures of his fellow shoppers
四、任務型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
For more than twenty years scientists have been seeking to understand the mystery of the “sixth sense” of direction. By trying out ideas and solving problems one by one, they are now getting closer to one answer.
One funny idea is that animals might have a builtin compass (指南針).
Our earth itself is a big magnet (磁体). So a little magnetic needle that swings freely lines itself with the big earth magnet to point north and south. When people discovered that idea about a thousand years ago and invented the compass, it allowed sailors to navigate (航海) on ocean voyages, even under cloudy skies.
Actually the idea of the living compass came just from observing animals in nature.
Many birds migrate twice a year between their summer homes and winter homes. Some of them fly for thousands of kilometers and mostly at night. Experiments have shown that some birds can recognize star patterns. But they can keep on course even under cloudy skies. How can they do that?
A common bird that does not migrate but is great at finding its way home is the homing pigeon. Not all pigeons can find their way home. Those that can are very good at it, and they have been widely studied.
One interesting experiment was to attach little magnets to the birds heads to block their magnetic sense—just as a loud radio can keep you from hearing a call to dinner. On sunny days, that did not fool the pigeons. Evidently they can use the sun to tell which way they are going. But on cloudy days, the pigeons with magnets could not find their way. It was as if the magnets had blocked their magnetic sense.
Similar experiments with the same kind of results were done with honeybees. These insects also seem to have a special sense of direction.
In spite of the experiments, the idea of an animal compass seemed pretty extraordinary. How would an animal get the magnetic stuff for a compass?
An answer came from an unexpected source. A scientist was studying bacteria that live in the mud of ponds and marshes. He found accidentally little rodlike bacteria that all swam together in one direction—north.
Further study showed that each little bacterium had a chain of dense particles inside, which proved magnetic. The bacteria had made themselves into little magnets that could line up with the earths magnet.
The big news was that a living thing, even a simple bacterium, can make magnetite. That led to a search to see whether animals might have it. By using a special instrument called magnetometer, scientists were able to find magnetite in bees and birds, and even in fish. In each animal, except for the bee, the magnetic stuff was always in or closer to the brain.
Thus, the idea of a builtin animal compass began to seem reasonable.

五、One possible version:
The picture above conveys a father is communicating with his daughters, who are absorbed in it, while the mother with her child is focused on playing on the mobile phones.
The picture reminds us to face a fact that different people have different ideas in raising their children. The two daughters who listen carefully to their father are sure to benefit a lot from the conversation and broaden their horizons in knowledge as well. On the contrary, the mother and her baby are playing mobile phone, which is bad for their health.
From my perspective, parents have the responsibility to set good examples to their children and tell them the disadvantages of smart phones. Secondly, they need to communicate with children as often as possible to build a harmonious relationship within the family. Besides, children should be taught to develop good habits and do meaningful things instead. Only in this way can they have a bright future. After all, they are the hope of the nation.
