A

A boy lost his arms in an accident. Since then, he has had to depend on the arms of his younger brother. In order to take care of him, his younger brother became his shadow (影子), never leaving him alone for years. Except for writing with his toes (大脚趾), he was unable to do anything in his life.

As the two brothers grew up together, they would often quarrel. Then one day, his younger brother wanted to live his own life, as many normal people do. So he was heart broken and didnt know what to do.

A similar misfortune (不幸) happened to a girl, too. One night her father went out looking for her mother, leaving her alone at home. She tried to prepare meals for her parents, but knocked over the light, causing a fire which took her hands away.

Though her elder sister was willing to take care of her, she decided to depend on herself. At school, she always studied hard. Most of all, she learned to be self reliant(自立的). Once she wrote the following in her composition,  “I am lucky. Though I lost my arms, I still have legs; I am lucky. Though my wings are broken, my heart can still fly.”

One day, the boy and the girl were both invited to appear on a television interview program. The boy told the TV host about his uncertain future at being left on his own. The girl, however, was full of confidence in her life. They both were asked to write something on a piece of paper with their toes. The boy wrote: My younger brothers arms are my arms; while the girl wrote: Broken wings, flying heart.

B

It was a cool October evening. Excitement and family members filled the hall. I was only a 7■year■old girl, but I was the center of attention. Finally, after weeks of preparation, I would show off all my hard work in a dance performance. Everything would be perfect—so I thought. I waited backstage (后臺) all dressed in my black tights with a golden belt. In a loud and clear voice, the master announced that my class was next.

My dance class was doing a routine (一套动作) on wooden boxes two feet by two feet, facing the audience. All I had to do in the next move was put one foot on the box next to mine and keep my other foot on my box. It really was an easy move. I was concentrating so much on keeping the huge smile on my face and holding my head up that I did not look where I was going. I missed my partners box and slipped (滑倒). There I was standing on the stage floor when my classmates were on top of their boxes. I could hear giggles coming from the audience, and I felt the blood rush to my face. I remembered my dance teacher had told us, “If you make a mistake, keep smiling so the audience will not notice.” I did my best to follow her advice as I continued with the routine.

When the curtain (幕布) dropped, so did my hopes for the evening. I cried sadly. I ran backstage, but no one could calm me down.

Recently I realized I had been a star that night. I was embarrassed, but I fought the urge to run off the stage. Instead, I finished the routine with a smile on my face. Now when friends and family laugh about the time I slipped during a dance performance, I can laugh, too.

(    )6. How did the writer feel before the performance?

A. Afraid           B. Nervous.         C. Confident.
