A Tribute to Farmers
Opinion.people.com.cn September 23
The Second Farmers Harvest Festival fell on September 23 this year. The festival was created last year and falls on Autumn Equinox, one of the 24 Solar Terms, a calendar of 24 periods and climates to govern agriculture in ancient China.
Its important for a large agricultural country like China to have such a festival. It refl ects the great attention the Chinese Government pays to agriculture, rural areas and farmers and the governments deep concern for farmers.
The great achievements of Chinas rural reform and development in the past 70 years since the founding of the Peoples Republic of China have been realized as a result of Chinese farmers hard work. The festival has greatly improved farmers sense of honor and confidence. For the whole society, to celebrate harvest means paying tribute to farmers for their hard labor and contribution, and creating a suitable environment for respecting labor and farmers.
Agriculture is related to a countrys national strength. For a country with a population of nearly 1.4 billion, food security concerns the wellbeing of the people and constitutes an important part of national security. China realized bumper summer grain harvest again this year, which helped to ensure supply, stabilize prices and increase confi dence in the economy.
The festival will contribute to turning agriculture into an industry with bright prospects, and making farming a desirable profession and rural areas livable places.
Reemergence of Animation
Caixin Weekly September 16
China started making animated films almost at the same time as Japan. The first full-length Japanese anime color film, Hakujaden (The White Snake Enchantress), an adaptation of the famous Chinese legend of the white snake, was released in 1958. Before that, The Magical Pen, a puppetoon film based on Chinese childrens book Ma Liang With the Magical Pen produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1955 had won multiple international prizes.
However, in the following years Chinas animation industry fell behind and in the 1990s when Japanese and U.S. animations entered the domestic market, most domestic animation companies became contractors of their foreign counterparts.
But in recent years, Chinas animation industry has seen fast growth. For instance, recently Ne Zha, loosely based on the tale of a namesake mythological figure from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) novel Fengshen Yanyi, or The Investiture of the Gods, achieved a box office of 5.6 billion yuan ($787.5 million) as of September 10, becoming the highest-grossing domestic animated fi lm and the second-highest grossing fi lm of all time on the Chinese mainland.
The new wave of animation craze is led by companies such as Coloroom Pictures, a subsidiary of Beijing-based studio Enlight Media, founded in 2015. However, in spite of the huge amount of capital poured into the sector, there are concerns that the bubble may burst if animated works quality doesnt improve. The industry should be propelled by creativity, rather than by capital, Lu Wei, producer of Monkey King: Hero Is Back, said.
Minors Information Protection
www.huanqiu.com September 18
The Cyberspace Administration of China, the countrys top Internet regulator, recently published a guideline on the protection of childrens personal information online. The guideline, to be implemented on October 1, is Chinas fi rst legislation on minors protection in cyberspace.
As a generation growing up in the age of the Internet, minors leave a large volume of information online when playing video games or wearing smart watches. This information amounts to a huge volume of data which can be used by transgressors to seek profi ts.
Leakage of childrens information is not uncommon. On one hand, children often lack awareness due to their age, and even if their awareness improves, they may not be able to prevent data breaches as they are something even adults cannot avoid.
On the other hand, relevant laws and regulations have not been fully developed. There are no special laws and regulations for childrens personal information protection online.
The new guideline stipulates that guardians should be informed of collection and use of childrens personal information in a clear manner and that the information can be collected and used only with guardians consent. The guideline also requires Internet operators to formulate their own rules on childrens personal information protection, and designate special staff to deal with data protection matters.
