Researchers (研究者) at the University of Sussex have found that cats use purr (發呼噜声) to communicate with their owners. Different from normal purring, it sounds like a “cry” with a similar frequency(频率) to a human babys. The researchers said cats could hit a human mind, and produce a sound that humans find very difficult to pay no attention to.
Dr. Karen McComb said the research started with her own cat. “It would wake me up in the morning with this non-stopping purr that was really rather boring,” Dr. McComb said. “After a little bit of study, I found some other cat owners also had similar situations like me.” Although the purrs might get a cat driven away from the bedroom, she said this boring purr often forced pet lovers to get up to fill their cats food bowl.
To find out why, Dr. McComb and her workmates had trained some cat owners to make records of their own cats sound, both their “asking” purrs and “non-asking” purrs. “When we played the records to people, even to those people with no experience of cats, they found the asking purrs more urgent (急迫的) and less pleasant,” said Dr. McComb.
“The frequency of sound that animals produce is different from humans. Cats are able to produce a low frequency purr,” explained Dr. McComb. “How urgent and unpleasant the purr is seems to depend on how much energy the cat puts in producing that cry,” said Dr. McComb. “A cats cry is similar to the cry of a human baby and this is a kind of sound that humans are highly sensitive to (对……敏感).”

“Every day I make a difference in the life of children,” says math teacher Chuck Trader, who was once a financier (金融家).
For more than 20 years, Chuck Trader enjoyed a highly successful job in a big company with a high salary (薪水). After that, Chuck recognized that he had stopped enjoying his work. To make matters worse, a few MBA graduates (畢业生) were entering the field, solving management problems by reducing the staff rather than by building relationships. With two young children, Chuck and his wife Peggy realized they were missing out get-together time. They expected to find a place called their “forever home” where they could watch their kids grow up in a stable (稳定的) environment. “It was time for a change,” he says.
In 2001, Chuck, then 45, gave up the job and had it changed.
Today, he is a middle school math teacher in St. Marys, Georgia, a little town at the south-eastern tip of Georgia. The job pays just a little more than $40,000 per year. And, to cap it all off, Chuck has been recently named by St. Marys Middle School “Teacher of the Year”.
While becoming active in his childrens school, Chuck realizes he has found his true calling: teaching. “There is no other job in which you have more chance to help so many young adults,” says Chuck. “Teaching is truly important to the future of our society.”
In the classroom, Chuck is able to make lesson plans real by taking advantage of his experience in business. 96 percent of Chucks students passed an important mathematics exam. “That is a very difficult achievement for any teacher, not to mention one who has a large group of students who are considered at risk.”
