Fine music and fine food

Joan:Everyone knows the famous line from Shakespeare, “If music be the food of love, play on!”I always feel that great musical performances are like great meals.

Valery:Centuries ago, rich people sitting in the boxes could bring their own feasts (and wine too!) to opera houses.

Joan:Most recently, I was introduced to a wonderful recital series that combines great food, great wine and great music.

Valery:I guess if it includes food and wine, it must take place in a restaurant!

Joan:Not just any restaurant, but a truly historic one in Barcelona! Restaurant 7 Portes (meaning “7 doors”)opened in 1836 and by the early 20th century it was known as a meeting place for artists and intellectuals, journalists and politicians.

Valery:Pablo Picasso used to live nearby. Whenever he ran up a big bill, he'd draw sketches as payment!

Joan:Maria Callas ate there too! Plácido Domingo often eats there after singing at the Gran Teatre di Liceu. And in the past seven years, the restaurant has hosted a recital series where young singers get a chance to perform in a friendly and festive environment. Basically, the top floor is converted into a recital space seating about 60, but电钢琴(但那确实是我听过最好型号的电钢琴!)。

餐厅的工作人员非常尊重艺术家:在演出时段他们会暂停一切上餐服务!because of space limitations, the accompanist plays an electric piano (albeit the best model I've heard!)

Valery:So the audience ate a beautiful multi-course dinner of traditional Catalan food, drank lots of the restaurant's house wines, and then settled in for a musical feast?

Joan:The feast that I witnessed in early December had something more. The featured singer was the Portuguese mezzo-soprano Helena Ressureição, with Josep Buforn on the piano. Apart from her gorgeously singing arias from Mozart'sLa Clemenza di Tito, Handel'sAriodante, Rossini'sLa Cenerentola, Gounod'sSapho,Bizet'sCarmenand Saint-Säens'Samson et Dalila, there was a “special treat.” The series' organizer Jordi Maddaleno invited his teacher and mentor Roger Alier(author of many books on opera) to introduce each of the arias, setting the mood and offering his own insight to help the audience appreciate the music even more.

Valery:For fancy meals, we cleanse our palates between courses to refresh our taste buds. Alier's introductions that evening “refreshed” the audience's ears.

Joan:Yes, after a meal of pumpkin soup, croquettes, cannelloni and fish, we had sorbet for dessert. The restaurant staff was so respectful of artists: during the performance they stopped all service!
