New Mexico is a place for diverse12 cultures. Its earliest settlers were Pueblo Indians; the Spanish came in the late 1600s. The Wild West never really left Albuquerque. Cowboys are still busy riding bulls and horses here. Native Americans, Spanish descendants13, artists from New York, the second-generation Mexican immigrants14, and other races from different regions are all sharing the same land. They live in harmony15 with each other, and they influence each others lives. They also rely on each other, too. There are 22 Native American tribes16 in New Mexico. Thus, New Mexico has one of the largest Native American populations in the United States. The American government has special policies to protect Native Americans. Native Americans lived there generation after generation, and have kept their unique17 art, culture and lifestyle.

One tenth of the New Mexican population are Native Americans. They can be found everywhere in New Mexico. You can find ancient petroglyphs18 here. Its the Native Americans diaries from a long time ago. Simple carvings19 are easy to find on the rocks, such as cows, sheep and horses. Today, Native Americans are still very active in all aspects of New Mexico. Native American artists sell handmade jewelry and art work in the Old Town of Albuquerque and the plaza of Santa Fe. When riding on the train, you will hear an announcement on the speaker, saying not to take photos or videos when passing through Native American reservations. Even if you are not at the reservation, please do not take photos of Native Americans without asking. And do not bargain20 too much if you are buying art work from them. After all, Native Americans are under special protection. They speak unique tribal languages and have special social rules. We need to respect each other for peaceful interactions.

In New Mexico, Native American culture is accessible to the entire city and all who visit. Some pueblos offer tours to outsiders, some cultural centers provide genuine21 encounters and real performances. Also, there are a lot of casinos(賭场)in New Mexico that are owned and operated by Native Americans. For people who do not gamble22, casinos are premium23 performing centers as well. You can see a lot of great performances here.

Overall, there are not too many Asian people in New Mexico. So, when local people meet Asians, they may think Asians are related to Native Americans more or less. Because if you trace back to hundreds and thousands of years ago, Native Americans were the very first people who traveled to the new continent of America.
