Dear readers

G20 Summit in Argentina is wrapped up with an official report covering a wide spectrum of subjects discussed at various conferences, forums and panelists workshops, which are ingredients of the theme “Building Consensus for Fair and Sustainable Development”. Apart from these speaker-to-listener classroom style “teachings”, what really interested me is the tight-scheduled face-to-face meetings between governments on bilateral and multilateral basis. On top of that, the meeting between President Trump of the United States and President Xi Jinping of the Peoples Republic of China is the most significant of all the media highlights in consideration of the fact that the world No.1 and No.2 economic giants have strained muscles in a “tug-of-war” for quite some time in trade tensions that resulted in tariff rate increase on merchandises imported into both countries.
The serious trade talk over a pleasant dinner is nothing short of a miracle, which was proceeding in an amicable setting rather than in a formalistically prim meeting room, an atmosphere that is apt to more light-hearted talking on any matters that weigh a lot for both countries. It is accurate to state that, in an overarching fashion, the trade war pauses at a watershed moment, rather than stops as many would naively deem it, if we think over the global issues in full perspectives, particularly with respect to the Sino-US relationship that is no longer what it was, judging by U.S. think-tankers to label China as its strategic adversary on global fronts.
Speaking of the “new deal” that was talked over the dinner table and promised to be implemented , including our more imports of U.S. agricultural and industrial products in return for U.S. pause in its scheme to increase 10%-to-25% tariffs on $200 billion goods imported from China, plus no more additional penalties on the rest of Chinese merchandizes, we welcome the very successful outcome from the high-level meeting to our hearts content, but stay calm and see what will really happen with reserved optimism because there are specific issues that remain in flux in the course of 90-day timetable. The dinner meeting with a new deal is made public only by statement with no specific details on the grounds to strike out a clear and convincing forecast. Moreover, 90 days is quite long when you have to cope with a fickle and quite changeable “captain” on a weather-vulnerable ocean course as we have already seen a different tone and rhetoric notes on Trumps tweets posted Tuesday, threatening to slap additional penalties on Chinese products if China does not make major changes in its economic relationship with the United States.
The turbulent year of 2018 is drawing close to an end, it is very often the time for people to make New-Year resolution to work hard to fulfill great expectations harbored in hearts. With that said in international trade scenario, would it be possible for our good wishes to be realized when we see a lot of uncertainties lying ahead of the course as the new year 2019 sets in? Keeping the worries aside, we will stay the course in our full and steadfast confidence of weathering the storm to make things better with our reliable, efficient and sustainable supply chain in natural and man-made fiber line-ups , competitive factor of production and admirable social stability.
