Host: Hi. Im hanging out with Haim at the legendary BBC Maida Vale Studios with Daniele and Este and Alana. I feel like Ive met you before, because, let me tell you my history with your brilliant band, OK, with Haim.
All: OK.
Host: So, I went to see you, against my will, at South-by-Southwest, the new music festival in Austin, Texas,…
All: Awhh. Thank you.
Host: …and you absolutely smashed it, and I was so glad I went to that gig, and Ive seen you a few times since, and you bring so much fun and so many different parts of music together, and you are legendary now, not only for your brilliant gigs and the singles that weve heard so far, but for just the fun that you bring to a room.
Tell us about the beginning, cause you were in a band with your Mum and Dad.
Daniele: Yeah, we were in a band with our parents, and we basically start, we formed the band right after I finished high school, cause I knew I really didnt want to go to college. I knew I wanted to pursue music in some sort of capacity, and so we started writing songs, like, right before my graduation, and we had our first gig on 7-7-07, so we kinda started just playing around L.A. for years, and then I started going on tour with other artists, and Alana was still in high school and Este was at UCLA.
Host: And so the parents were in the band at that time. You were “Rockin Haim.”
Daniele: No they werent in the band at that time. Thats when we kinda broke off on our own, but we started…no Rockin Haim started…
Alana: You wanna go way back. Daniele: Yeah you wanna go…
Alana: When I was four we started Rockin Haim cause my Dad woke up from a dream—Im not kidding—woke up from a dream, and woke up my Mom, and was like, “We play music with the kids.” And the next day my Dad bought us all instruments. I think the first song we learned was “Mustang Sally.”
Host: How did you start writing the songs that we now know and love and see you play live and hear the records?
Daniele: Basically we were kind of at a point in—we had been a band for, at this point, what, four years.
Alana: We definitely learned a lot in those four years. Like, every single year we recorded an EP and hated it, like, …
Daniele: Yeah, we didnt know how to record.
Alana: There are so many Haim EPs that are never going to be released.
Daniele: No, theyll never see the light of day, yeah. Alana: Each time we learned something new in the studio or, like, we learned something new about gear, and the really important, like, basics about, you know, …
Daniele: Recording.
Alana: Recording, and…
Daniele: Getting the sound, sonics, you know. So we just decided, like, were not gonna play anymore. Were gonna just write and record, and demo, and we wrote the Forever EP .
(Soundbite from Forever)
Host: The tour bus must be crazy on a Haim tour.
Alana: Our tour van.
Host: Oh, sorry, tour van…
Alana: Were not that cool yet. Were not that cool.
Este: I have a makeshift bed thats actually a shelf. Host: You know, for, at your gigs, dealing with hecklers. Ive seen you chat up the sound master guy…
Este: Yeah.
Host: …bouncers, bar staff, fans down the front. Este: I just like people.
Host: OK, fair enough, its not a bad thing.
Este: I just like talking to people.
Host: Yeah.
Alana: If youre in the front row, Este will talk to you…
Este: Ill talk to you.
Alana: …for sure. So, just know that.
Host: Little tip for Haim fans.
Este: Yeah. I just, I like having a relationship with my audience…
Host: Yeah.
Este: …and taking, you know, taking on hecklers is just a bonus. I love it.
Daniele: My dad is a very passionate father.
Papa Haim: Well, first of all, you know, I tried to let them to be very driven, driven anything they do, in…in life, if its gonna be music, or anything else.
Daniele:He…really informed, I think, everything we do musically.
Papa Haim: You know, if you wanna be good in this business, to be a good musician, you know, you have to put the time and you have to practice.
Este: Theres been three drum sets, you know. And he always had this dream of, like, us three, like, playing drums at the same time. I know that my Dad is kind of living vicariously through us for sure.
